Ok, I have aprox. 75,000 miles on my transmission and was wondering if it is safe to change the fluid and filter. I was listending to the radio this morning and they have a program that they talk about automobile servicing. They said that if you have close to 80,000 miles that a transmission fluid flush and change could damage the transmission. What do y'all think, I don't have the money to replace or rebuild the trans right now.

I have heard the same thing. I had around 85,000 this past summer and I had the whole thing flushed out and filter changed. I have not had any problems at all with it! But on the other hand other people that I know have changed it and had problems, so I really don't know the real answer on whats right or wrong.
Bah, that radio show was probably by some shisters from AAMCO Tranmissions. I wouldn't waste time changing that filter as it's really a screen. Just dump the fluid in the pan and refill it. You will be fine.
Basically it'd be like not changin your motor oil...you wouldn't do that would you?
I change my tranny fulid 12-15K mi.

I have to call BS too. I have heard that for years but I dont believe it is true. The only problem I could see is if you had some trash tucked away in a corner of your valve body, flushing it could dislodge it and get stuck in one of the passages. I say go ahead and change the fluid and be done with it.
I wouldn't do a flush...too much $$$. I change my ATF ~12-15Kmi...it is so damn cheap it's silly not to. :twocents:Quote:

BTW...I just change the fluid via that drain plug.
Ok, thats what I will do. So the filter doesn't really filter anything to get clogged up, and does not need to be changed?
The filter is a screen that keeps metal filings from getting into the valve body...when you turn the vehicle off all that crap floats to the bottom of the pan anyway.Quote:

I want to add a transgo shift kit in the future. I have been reading that this may cause problems with an older transmission. Should I stay away from it, or will this cause no problems?

Well it will cause problems is installed incorrectly. 75K mi isn't that high of milage. If done properly it will lengthen the life of the tranny but eliminating the factory short comings.Quote:

The kit isn't too expensive... like $100 from KDS but the labor to install it is like $250-350. I will not mess with another trans unless it is out of the vehicle...except for fluid changes.
