NO LAUGHING.

This is kind of experimental just to see if I felt any gains or not. The concept is the same as any other cold air intake - the more you can get to the engine, the better.

So I put two "collectors" in place of the tow hooks...

The drivers side one has an elbow which hopefully pushes the incoming air smoothly around to join the air from the passengers side "collector"...

The passengers side "collector" runs straight back to a "T" where the air from the drivers side meets up with it, then a series of elbows sends it up into the stock air box...

Maybe it's my imagination, maybe the ported throttle body is getting a little better each day, but mid- to top-end feels GOOD. I imagine there's quite a bit of air being pushed through the two 4" openings. I would have to think there would be SOME improvement over the stock intake location (through the fenderwell!?)...

Anyway, I didn't get too crazy painting it yet and yes, it has some slight give so it's not quite centered, but if I decide to keep it, I'll make it look a little prettier.

Again no laughing. Or I call my Uncle Guido.

I like it. It can't hurt. What you should do is find collectors that will fit perfectly over those, or make it to where those circular collectors fit entirely over that square, then find some grille that matches your to cover the area. I swear you won't spend that much more on it, just time.

Did you notice anything from it? I'm sure you didn't really, but still a cool design.

Well I think I noticed some at higher speeds - likely when the air is being forced through the filter more. But I'm with you on the fitment issue. The problem is the framing where the hook bolts to is right in the way, so there's not a lot of room to do stuff. I may just buy some sheet metal and custom fab some collectors that surround the entire opening. Same idea as Volants ram air - just more of it.

It pulls harder when I&#39;m going over say 60 or so...but like I said, that could be the throttle body - who knows.

What I DO know is it isn&#39;t hurting anything. Now I just need to pretty it up some.

With hell freezing over and dual cold air ports on the front bumper, that thing ought to run a whole lot better now. :laugh:

I would be carefull to not go threw any water. You dont want that sucked up. I did something silimiar. But i used a dryer hose and instead of routing it to the bottom i routed it behind the front grill.

Nice idea, i have the volant scoop. I put it in with the intake so i dunno the effects of having it. Only once has water BARELY made it to the filter cause thats what i was trying to do. I literly went through about a foot of water to check what happens, but nothing happend. BTW, the volant scoop is only about half of the opening. So you have to be getting ALOT more air than i do.

pretty clean install...now it will be like a treasure hunt when you clean your filter (about every 6-8,000 now. i find all kinds of random shit in my intake with my ram air setup. cigirette buts, gravel, dragon flies, millions of other un-identifiable spattered bugs, leaves/pine needles, birds, etc. ok so i stretched the truth a lil with a bird but the rest is the usual crap i find in there. it really funks up the filter

Just Times Square? Around there there&#39;s a lot to see I guess. But I would branch out. Go into Manhattan and go to Central Station, The Chrysler Building (amazing architecture), and the Empire State Building (bring your camera obviously and there may be a line unless you buy the tickets in advance). Just park in one of the garages (around &#036;32) and hoof it to all three places. It&#39;s a fun time. And get a hot dog from one of the corner vendors - they&#39;re gooood. That stuff is kind of central Manhattan area.

Then head south and check out Chinatown while you&#39;re there - it&#39;s pretty crazy.

From there you should go further south to Lombardi&#39;s - it&#39;s NY&#39;s first licensed pizzeria. Been there since 1905 and their pizza is fresh and good. And they have a couple of local beers on tap. Then you could go over and see where the Twin Towers were.

Those are some of the things I would recommend doing - makes for a fun day.

Thanks - it was more of a pain than it looks (didn&#39;t have a 4" hole saw to drill through the metal under the stock air box and my DeWalt jig saw is too big to fit in there. I need to do some tweaking to make it look a little better.

Yeah I was worried about that and the water issue. I may put some sort of fiber/mesh material over the True Flow filter so it will act as a barrier and keep the filter clean. Maybe a slit in one of the pipes to let moisture out...Still got some work to do on it.

Dude, I was going to say that--but you beat me to it. That was one reason that I shyed away from the Volant CAI because of the thought of water entering my intake. :nono: I know that it is a long shot (since my truck hasn&#39;t seen rain since &#39;03), but due to MY luck, ANYTHING can happen. :whack:

I would drill some weep holes in the bottom of the collectors before it heads upstairs so that if water gets in there (and it will), it can easily escape through the weep holes. :thumb:

Also, you might wanna put a 4" dia. filter half way up---maybe take a high-flo air filter you put in your house and cut it into a 4.25 dia. circle and shove it in there. That will help with cleaning your air filter so much---and you can replace that filter all the time---cause if you buy a 20"x20" filter, you can cut out 15 circles to make filters...

And (I can&#39;t tell by the pics) you probably might want to cover the hole with duct tape so you seal off the stock chamber to the fenderwell. The least amount of turbulence, the better. Speaking of turbulence... I may be retarded in saying/recommending this, but you could put one of those Tornado thingys in the tubing so you get that rotation effect which would smooth out the flow through the tubing...Just a thought...

Missed a couple of your points - good idea on the filters, I may try that.

Ok, maybe the Torando thing isn&#39;t that bad... :smile: I put one in the homemade CAI I did for my g/f&#39;s &#39;98 OBS Z71, and I could tell a slight difference. I would not go pay &#036;65 at Autozone for one--go on Ebay--they are a lot cheaper. :thumb:

And as for the 4" filters---cut the dia. slightly bigger than the tubing so that the filter doesn&#39;t slide up or bunch up. This is kinda uncharted territory in homemade, functional CAI...I wish I had more ideas to help out... :duh:

Well sometimes you never really know, so you just have to go with the "can&#39;t hurt" frame of mind and try it out.

I don&#39;t think I&#39;ll do a filter directly in the pipe. I&#39;ll probably put a thin gauze over the actual True Flow filter. That way I can just peel it off and replace it when need be. Should keep the True Flow filter clean.

Yeah I think I&#39;ll do like a wire &#39;weave&#39; mesh and paint it black and then paint the pipe black.

I don&#39;t know how much benifit the drivers side one is doing, cause when the two pipes intersect there is going to be a good amount of turbulance, one may be better that two and it may allow to get a smoother more straight through air flow. The smoother and staighter the better. As for the collector I think I&#39;ve seen a/c registers at Home Depot about that size or so close it will easly trim down. I would think that some matching grill inserts would not only look good, but work to keep out the big stuff. :twocents:

Yeah I thought of doing some kind of curved diverter on the passengers side so when the drivers side supply gets to it, they&#39;re both going the same direction. Which is why I had contemplated doing a final version in PVC since they have some fittings that would accomplish that.

I scoured Home Depot and Lowes for something to use as a collector, and the pieces I have are about the only thing that would fit in there and accomplish the purpose.

Wish I had those round fog lights like you have - they would work pretty well.

I&#39;ve seen something similar done with a Mustang.

Yes, very good point. Now that I think about it, the one on the passenger side should only be needed. The driver&#39;s side port may be canceling out some of the smooth air flow that the passenger side is receiving. Makes me wonder why Volant didn&#39;t do both ports... Maybe they already figured that out in their testing??? :twocents:

I think two would definitely be better than one (the more air the better), the trick is to merge the two airflows together smoothly. If the passengers side had a partial bend directing the air to be in line with the incoming air from the drivers side, I think it would work really well.

Should have run two pipes up to the air box. Think of it as your exhaust... two 2.25 pipes merged into one 3" pipe, not two 2.25" pipes merged into one 2.25" pipe.. :cough: :gasp: :choke: For best results we usually go to a larger merged pipe or duals to keep the best flow. :rock:

No, you&#39;re right, I used all 4". My initial thinking was it would be fine because I wasn&#39;t sure if I would be maximizing the available flow potential of the pipe - so combining the two into one would maybe create a small &#39;forced induction&#39; effect through the filter. I could be way off in that though.

For what i have been told ram air does not become functional until 60MPH.

That&#39;s probably about right because that&#39;s where my truck seems to be doing better. But the results are dependent on the amount of air coming in (I&#39;m pretty sure I&#39;m getting more that one of those Volant scoops).

awesome idea as far as keeping your filter clean we use them on choppers and TRT may have them but its a sock that goes around your airfilter to keep moister out and does not affect airflow. you might try that. i will see if i can find one around the shop and give you the name of it.. i have seem them on remote mount turbos as well... hence TRT...

I have the True Flow filter which is the same size as stock, so if you came across a gauze sock or something that would custom fit that would be awesome. I&#39;ll do a search to when I get time...

For the collector you can get a small 6" a/c register and section it down to a 4". I agree with Outlaw weld a final one up out of turbo piping.
