i have a friend who has a 373 rearend told me i can have it if i go pick it up ( great friend) anyway it has drum breaks on it, mine has disc, i hadnt looked at it but couldnt i just change the axels out to keep it disc?
p.s. or just change the differientials

I concur. Pull the gears and swap them. If it has a posi and you don't, grab it to go with the gears.
easy enough i just picked up the whole damn rearend lol ....
my truck isnt posi has 323 gears the one i picked up has 373 posi didnt realize i could just swap out the gears and such ...
Yep, just have to get someone to install them for you. Where are you located in TX?
yes located in southeast texas.. why is that hard to change them out?
Getting the pinion depth is very important or you will destroy the gears. If you've never done it, pay a pro to do the install - or someone that knows what they're doing. :twocents:
there is a guy in houston that installs gears and has been highly recommended on another board. u can ask wheatley who he uses cuz ive heard numerous people say awesome things about the quality of install and pricing.
Thats what Im going to have to do once I get my 6.0 in. Im not gonna really haul ass with the 323 though lol..dont wanna destroy nothing

got the rearend and a friend wants to buy it, gonna sell it to him for what it will cost for a auburn or eaton differential would cost, but i am trying to find out how i can find out my spline count someone mentioned about some number in the glove box if this is the case which number would it be... a good sample would help me figure it out ...
30 splines if its a 10 bolt rear end.

I like Auburns. My personal preference but the others may be better. Jegs sells them for $408.

good job! build it right. red has become increasingly helpful to me cuz he has explained that there is no reason to add power to an engine if u cant transfer it to the ground efficiently. thats why on of my next mods is going to be a new rearend with 3:73's. i just ran into a helluva deal on a few other things so again my plans have changed. also need to get the truck running correctly before anything else. i think im going to do that tomorrow after work. :sad:
ok one more question before i order these i see like 7.5 7.6 and or 8.5 8.6 now i need to find out exactually which one i need ....
88-2006 chevy fullsize trucks, 1/2 ton, have 8.5" rear ends. If you can afford it, buy the pro-series model. Its 542052, I think. Another $80.

I'd recommend a Detroit TrueTrac. They're supposed to be slightly more positive than the Auburn and smoother in operation. Also, there's the added benefit that there are no clutches in it to wear out and therefore no special lube needed. With that said, I had an Auburn in my '89 and it worked great. I just installed a TrueTrac in my '01 on Saturday.

now i gotta decide on what tire size, looking at 20" 18" and stock 16" i want 10" plus in the backand 8.5s in the front ... just gotta decide on what as of now i put my stocks back on ..
Man, I don't know how you can be any smoother operating than an Auburn. There are no working parts inside it other than friction springs pressing the cones into the tapers and a set of spider gears. :eek:
Sorry to bring up a post from the past... I was wondering if something similar would be a good fit for my truck?
4.8L 5speed with 3.42 gears and lots of one wheel peel. How bad will a posi setup hurt cornering?? Thanks in advance
As long as you don't install a spool it won't hurt cornering at all. The posi/limited slip diff(LSD) will help you all around for traction, even in wet braking situations.
