So I have a problem with my stupid stock cluster...the oil pressure and fuel level gauges dont work, I will fill up and it tells me Ive got low fuel... So I was thinking about putting a new cluster in, like from an Escalade or something, but I was also thinking about getting rid of entire cluster and doing just a tach and speedo on the dash and the other necessary gauges on a pillar mount. Im not too sure if this is do able, and if so what it would entail....any hints?
Most likely a new fuel sender in the tank and a new oil pressure sender at the back of the intake will fix both issues. Need to do some testing to be sure.
Sure it is the cluster, not the sending units or wiring?
IMO, just swap clusters. Pick up an SS, Escalade or HD so you get the trans temp too.

No one is touching removing the entire cluster.....
my fuel gauge does that too when i fill up, after i drive a few miles and burn some gas it'll work ok.......its a sensor somewhere...atleast thats what ive been told
Well mine does it all the time. No matter what its never right. Like its constantly at just under 1/8th of a tank or on E.
The older the truck (99-07), the more likely the sender will fail. They have very small "fingers" that rub on the resistor card to send the return voltage signal back to the PCM for fuel level. The PCM translates the return voltage and sends the information to the IPC via Class2 data lines. The fingers break off and/or the card wears out. Anytime the circuit is open, the gauge defaults to full. Short the circuit and the gauge will read empty. If the fingers break off, the circuit is always open and it will read full. If the card is wearing, the gauge will read properly at certain levels and incorrect at others. Most times 99-00 will flop all over the place.
Yeah, my fuel sending unit is haywire. It is all over the place when it is below a 1/4 tank. But +1 on what Nate said. I am sure the sending units are prolly the culprit, but there is a small chance that the wiring could be an issue too... But I would place a strong bet on the sending units...
