more problems.....:(

So friday morning on the way to work, all the sudden there is this horrible noise coming from under the hood, sounded like i had a bad rocker or something. But oil pressure was fine and so was coolant temp, so i had it towed back home and opened the covers up and one rocker had a chip on it, and a little crack, so i replaced all the rockers, only torque wrench i could find starts at 25 ft-lbs so i have been using that.

Now last night i was driving and the check oil level light flashed, so WTF, pulled over sure enough low, so i stop at the gas station and buy two quarts, throw one in and it seems to have brung it back up. Checked it this morning Cold and it was in the middle where it should be. Where did the oil go? new seals and seats?

And also, how bad do i ned a converter for the truck? i just spent 250 on rocker arms, just got some GMPP ones from GM, dont have time to wait, its my DD and i have missed too much work already, so i dont have much money at all or do i have the time right now to install it.

these engines are notorious for oil consumption. That is why a lot of guys run an oil seperator or catch can. It gets burned through the intake manifold. The more high RPM runs the more oil gets burned due to oil being turned into a mist in the engine and then sucked into the intake via the PCV valve.

hmmmmm that would make sense, because i did a couple "to the floor" runs past 100 the other day, and last week and such, its fun.


whats all entailed in a "catch can", or should i just check the oil every week.


what about a converter?

If the engine is "bogging" below a certain RPM you need a converter or gears. If your cam's torque curve begins about 2500 rpm you need to get a converter about 200 rpm higher, so 2700-2800. A converter makes all the difference in the world when it comes to acceleration, I dropped a full half second off my 1/8 mile times with nothing more than a proper converter for the cam.

Search for an AMW catch can or even an oil seperator from an air compressor will work inline with the PCV valve..

ya it seems to bog down aroudn 2k, but then past 2500 it goes like crazy, its not hurting the transmission or anything is it? i cant see why it would be.

whats that goign to do to my mpg? im going to get it on the dyno hopefully in a couple weeks.

so i ended up replacing all the rocker arms, one was chipped, not sure how or how long, but the noise never came back, and thinking about it, it was only while i was driving when it made the noise. So since i had done engine work recently i feared the worst towed it home and of course called the ever knowing tyler at 7am.

So about a week later to this past friday, driving about 1 block from home, had drivin a couple other days, noise returns, WTF...sounded like the same thing, almost. Turn around, go back to the drive way leave it running, definately not motor.....Come to find a rusted out and broken rear gas tank strap, rusted on the tire side, gets loose swings down hits the drive shaft.

Not sure if it actually was the original noise or not, but it was pretty dumb.

Well at least you got new rockers in. LOL that is a good problem to have.

....and all along I'm glad I don't live where there's rust like that.

What happens when the tank falls out?

i dont know, the tank never moved so who knows.

Now my only problem is i am still burning oil, i was idling for a little bit like 15 min, and i noticed that there was a bluish smoke behind the truck for a bit, but nothing noticable while driving.

Bad PCV valve? Or a Bad seal or something? Gonna throw some high milage 5w-30 in there and see if it helps.

EDIT: Also when i used to start the truck before the cam, i would have oil pressure all the time, 60 on startup and then eventually go down to 40 and move in pressure with RPM.

Now i start the truck, it sits at 40, or what it reads at 40, then wont move with RPM till its warmed up for about 20 min, then for a couple minutes or so, 10 maybe at the most, one day it was constant, the oil pressure was moving 5 or so PSI, running crusie control, flat road it jumps around. So that cant be good, it did it today for 10 min, and then just stayed at 50 for the entire 80 mile road trip, but i also noticed i was burnin a little oil while idling after 15 min.

you need to stop driving it if your not getting oil pressure!!! Get it looked at pronto!!! You might have bad lifters, or the oil pump might need to be replaced. Oil pressure is not somthing that you want to get low on.
