I guess im gonna order this - 4L80E Solenoid Master Kit 94-03 and then pull the pan and check it out. I wont really know what im lookin at because Ive never done any tranny work more than just changing a pan. Unless there are peices falling out then I probably wont know if its broken. If its gunked up hopefully Ill be able to see it.
-
its pretty simple to pull apart an put bavk the same way. now adding springs, plungers and blah blah! youre on your own bc ive never done that either lol.
i wouldnt just change noids for no reason ya know but hopefully thats what fixes it. IF not take it to the tranny shop an have them pull it apart an double check the internals to make sure all is well. if not then rebuild it
-
Ya. I was told I wouldnt have to pull the valve body to change the solenoids?
I took it to a tranny shop and they were scared to touch it since it was a conversion/swap. Their scanner was showing some weird things I guess cause of some of the things that had been turned off in the tune.
Im hoping it doesnt need rebuilt since all the gears actually work just not all the time lol. Seems like if they work at all then there arent any hard parts broken.
-
to change the noids no, but im saying if its no that bc the valve body is bad or something its easy to pull
if you have all the gears when the fluid is cold i dont think its going to be a noid. i say a problem with the valve body, but im not a tranny guy. i can put a stall in, pull servos, change filters, an pull a valve body to
install a new seperator plate but i cant pin point your problem.
-
Well I hope its not a valve body problem. That sounds like it could get expensive.
-
i dunno...pull a used one. a tranny shop should be able to explain "about" whats wrong with it if you tell them its a 9x 80e with a looser stall. everything else is stock, but when its cold i have all 4 gears after it warms up i only have gear x and x what do yall think it could be?
-
Thats what I did. They plugged their scanner into it and got scared and ran away. They said somethin about not knowing what exactly it was since its not stock. They asked what exactly the pcm was and i said it was an '02 5.3 with a 4l80e tune. They wanted to know what year 4l80e tune and i didnt know so they ran scared. I called Nelson and Erica told me they are all the same. ? It seemed that its not that he didnt want to help just he was scared to.
I hold more respect for the very knowledgable folks on here than i do the average mechanic. It seems no one knows tho. I think that this build thread has become very cluttered and because of it no one paying attention to it. I have made posts in the Mechanical section but not gettin much feedback.
-
im a basic mechanic, i only tinker with my stuff an my friends stuff. like i said i dont deal with trannys. im a diesel mechanic by occupation. we dont work on transmissions like this.
try that kit, if it doesnt then call a transmission shop an ask their advice not that shop youve been talking to imo.
dont get scared to pull the valve body, nothings hard about it.
-
Arent there beads or something up in the valve body?
-
yeah Balls, but its all good. unbolt all but 2 bolts then unbolt the other 2 an slowly let it down. easy as hell
-
I'm sure I can screw it up
-
yeah but man, its not too hard. unbolt it, put it on your work
table, take a pic of it lol, start checking it out. grab some brake cleaner an spray it down real good JUST incase a spring tunnel or something is clogged. or unbolt it an take it to a tranny shop an see if they can tell what is wrong with it.
ill help the best i can but its hard to do anything by not looking at it.
also, just because your tranny is an OBS tranny doesnt mean anything, it responds to the ecm an the "tune" is coded for an 02 4L80E imo. so next time you use a tech II just tell 'em its for an 02 2500 with the 6.0 an it SHOULD give a rough idea of where to look an what could be wrong.
.02 take it as you can man, i dunno anything about this problem
-
Alright. Got all the parts changed out and now I have first gear no problem. The truck drives much better and more consistently. But, I still have no 4th gear and no tcc lockup. Right now im thinking external wiring issue. Also, the 1-2 shift is very sluggish. It kinda pauses in the middle of the shift and then when it does it shifts HARD. Any ideas?
My 3-peice engine cover comes in tomorrow and then Im gonna clean up the wiring and stuff and take pics and probably a vid too. Ill post the stuff on here for anyone who still cares to see.
-
Do you have both VSS sensors wired in ?
-
No I only have the back one. I argued with my wiring guy and my tranny guy for like five minutes bout this. They swear that ever since like 05 they dont require it. Please let me know on this. My harness only has one so i dont know what to do if I have to add another one.
-
-
hmmm, not sure about the 05+ part. I know on my 96 4L80e it would bang into 2nd and never shift past that with only 1 plugged in.
-
Hmm I bet I need both sensors plugged in. If there isnt another plug in my harness how do I add another? Wouldnt it give a dtc if it required both sensors?
-
You can get a conversion harness from Nelson or speed Inc. Put it in then run the wires to the ecm. That's what I did on my 05 when I swapped to the 80.
-
Guess thats what I should have done. I thought the conversion harness essentially just moved the pins around so thats what I had my wiring guy do on the connector. Still, no one can tell me which pins exactly need to be changed.
-
Showed my wiring guy this... 4L60E to 4L80E Wiring Swap - PerformanceTrucks.net Forums and he says he put pin T in location U instead of S into location U. Should explain the problem. We are going to fix it friday night.
I drove it around town a bit tonight and it gave me 4th gear everytime no problem.
Still unsure about the 1-2 shift issue. Probably need the second vss plugged in. Any idea where I can get another vss plug and pigtail?
P.S. - I've emailed Allen @ Nelson Performance THREE times about a possible tune issue and cant get a response. Any idea? Dont like being ignored.
-
hes a busy guy so emails dont really cut it on an issue like this. so call em an tell them you need to speak with Allen. they are a huge help. i hadda call to make sure i was cutting the right wires since im not a wiring wise :(
-
People say they have luck when they call him. When I call I either get no answer or Erica tells me he's unavailable. It's not that I don't like talking to Erica it's just I'd like to get answers from the man himself. I understand he's too busy to talk on the phone since he's off doing work so I email. In the past I have had some success through email but now it seems I'm being ignored. Not trying to talk bad about NP but, it is frustrating.
-
-
understood, but at the same time....a business is hell probably and it's keeping him very busy. id give it some time and then go from there.

ya gonna try and add that other sensor pigtail? hows it coming other than the tranny problem

It's coming very well. I've been driving the truck every day. Tonight we are fixing the transmission wiring and finishing cleaning up/looming the rest of the wiring. After we get done I'll take some pics and probably a vid sometime this weekend when it's not raining.
The only issues I have left are:
1. Weird hot starting problem - I'm thinking tune
2. Weird 1-2 shift issue - if it doesn't straighten up after I fix the trans wiring I'm gonna try the other speed sensor
3. Occasional idle surge - ?
4. Leaking power steering pump - it's got a bad seal. I have the seal I'm just dreading pulling it off and apart. Will do this weekend.
-
well thats good man, i love seeing a project getting finished. i should have mine done very soon. then itll be time for the 6.2 swap lol always a project! we just put a SC on an 09 gmc CCSB :) its niiiiceeee
-
Ya its definitely nice to have my old truck back. Im getting compliments left and right and even compliments on the looks lol which is weird because I havent done anything good with the looks lately. Everyone is impressed with the way it sounds and runs now. I cant drive anywhere without someone tryin to race me. Speakin of which, no biggie but I smoked a new Tahoe tonight. :)
We messed with the wiring tonight. TCC lockup works now which is awesome on the highway. But, we cleared the code and a code came back cause my light is back on. Ill get it scanned tomorrow. And, it still has the scary 1-2 shift issue. Guess Ill hunt down another speed sensor connector. Found it for $20 on electricaladvantage.net. If I cant find it at a salvage yard I will order it from there.
We also cleaned up/loomed it all tonight. Sorry, forgot the camera tho. It looks ten times better now although its not the cleanest wiring job. Somethings should have been routed different and located elsewhere but its no show truck so it'll be alright. Still need some heat shielding for some of the loom cause part of it melted from being about 2.5 inches away from the header. Will get some pics and a vid before the weekend is up. Promise.
-
sweet. just get you a small roll of header wrap and wrap where it's melting the loom.
-
Here are the pics and vids if anyone missed it. Thought id start a new "completed" thread so a few more would see it. http://www.ls1truck.com/forums/lsx-t...tml#post368933
We got the trans running good and besides the 1-2 shift issue it has no problems but my check engine light came back on. Its a code for the pressure manifold switch. I dunno what it is now. I cleared it and if it comes back I will investigate further. I guess if there is still a problem with the pressure manifold switch then it could be the culprit for my 1-2 shift issue. Besides that it drives fine so I almost want to ignore it. One weird thing I noticed tho, after I cleared the code I didnt have my hot starting issue anymore. Atleast, not for the next 3 times I started it hot. Probably unrelated but time will tell.
We hooked up the cruise control and it didnt work. I realized why a couple days later. We tapped into the brake signal wire to show the TAC when the brakes were applied. Well, apparently the TAC needs to see the resistance from the light bulb before it will act properly. I have an LED bar for tailights so it saw no resistance. I will wire in a bulb and socket before the bar and then it should work.
BTW, I got this "hot starting problem" on video today.
The first time it barely catches itself and continues idling.
http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...ngProblem1.jpg
The second time it dies like normal and I have to restart it.
http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/s...ngProblem2.jpg
BTW, the tach was not shot on purpose it just happened to be in front of the camera when I was shooting. If it helps yall then good.
Any ideas? Someone else said tune needed adjusted.
-
Cruise control works. Big thanks to 93blackbeast and my buddy Tim for that.
I have a P1810 dtc that wont go away. Dont even know what it means even after I looked it up online.
Truck drives great. Been driving it nearly every day. On my 3rd retune from Nelson and I think its gonna take a couple more before its done. Im using the truck to haul my other toy to the track 3 hours away. Ill report on how the truck does but I have no doubt in it.
The other toy....

-
sexy toy.
ive got 600miles on mine :) and its not fully tuned (it wouldnt scan) i DD mine bc its my work truck. i have no doubt in mine either. isnt it awsome that you built your truck, not paid someone to do it or bought someone else completed LS swap
-
Ya, it makes you feel confident in driving it and confident that when something does break you can fix it because you put it together. I just wish I could tune mine myself because thats pretty much how you have to work on these things these days. I had my first experience with hptuners yesterday. 93blackbeast came by to help me with some things and we plugged in his hptuners to use as a diagnostic tool and that thing is pretty cool.
-
yeah, i have EFILive scan cable but it's poo bc i can't tune anything lol. im afraid id blow my truck up.
-
Yea, I was glad to see we got the cruise working...that drive to the track would have been a pain with your foot on the pedal the whole time :)
Let me know when you get those powers AC plates and we'll throw some cold air at that beast!
-
Ya the drive through Tulsa was great. The only problem I had was the sh!!tty Oklahoma roads beating up my old truck. Hit a blind pothole at about 60mph and hit was so bad I pulled over to make sure everything was ok. The cruise was definitely a lifesaver.
Something is still not 100% right with this trans though.
1.After driving ~5+ miles with the converter locked it starts acting funny like randomly taking 4th gear away and still locking the converter. Or when I slow down and then take off again it shifts abruptly and then locks the converter in 2nd and then again in 3rd while accelerating.
Another weird thing is something must not be hooked up correctly because I can touch the brake while cruising down the highway and it never unlocks the converter.
2. I have a DTC P1810 that comes back immediately after being cleared. Im not even really sure what it is after looking it up online but it definitely has to do with the trans. All switches and solenoids have been replaced so it cant be that.
3. It still has a pause then hard shift when shifting 1-2 hard throttle.
I am awaiting (in the mail) another vss connector to hook up the other vss. Hopefully that fixes some problems.
BTW 93blackbeast, remember how the converter wont lock when the cruise control is selected OFF? Well when I get symptom #1 it leaves the converter locked...
