Where is the pinion shim located? I don't remember there being one on the stock pinion unless your talking about the crushsleeve.
On a very worse not I git home tonight and there was rear diff fluid every where I think it's coming from the seal on the front of the pinion so tomorrow i'm rechecking everything!
-
The pinion shim is between the pinion gear and the rear bearing that must be pressed onto the pinion gear before the gear is installed into the housing.
-
Is this also called the crush sleeve?
-
No. The crush sleeve is a band (think large wedding ring LOL) that goes on the pinion right before the FRONT pinion bearing. The pinion shim is very thin (0.020-0.038") and sheet metal.
-
Oh I see now I went and looked at my old pinion, it looks like all that is there is just part of the gear.
Thanx GasGuzzler could there have been serious damage done by not having this installed?

-
Ummm, yes. Like I said in the very beginning, if the thing is set up to whine, it probably always will unless it was redone right away. No pinion shim? Sounds like you needed a little more help. We can help you get it fixed but there's a good chance you'll have to live with the whine or buy another set of gears.
-
I think I will just live with the whine.
THANX for all your expertise!!!!
-
Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
What I meant about living with it was AFTER you get it set up with the proper pinion shim it will most likely still make noise that you'll have to live with unless you replace the gears again.
DO NOT keep diving it if there is no pinion shim!
