If I were gonna build a carb engine, I would just build a 383 or something similar, the ls1 is a FI engine, I wonder how it's gonna run with a carb setup not to mention no control over the timing and a/f ratio.

Well, I was figuring that old motors with carbs didn't have a computer to tune so they are tuned manually. Wouldn't you be able to tune these trucks this way, with the carb the computer can't control anything anymore. Don't know much about these setups.

With the LS1 you can alter the timing table at any rpm, so with cammed cars you can alter the idle area which will give it a better idle, in the old days, that wasn't possible, however, i believe companies have a device that will alter the timing as rpm increases for the old school setups. Still limited imo.
the ls1 has a wheel on the back of the crank with teeth on it, it can determine where the crank is at all times, for the cam; there is a cam position sensor, knowing the location of the crank and cam at all times gives you pretty good control.

MSD makes alot of timing computers that can adjust the timing to whatever you want it to be. I don't think this setup will lack any tuning ability. I still don't see anything wrong with someone wanting to put a truck block in a muscle car with a carb on top. The 6.0 has a price advantage over alot of similar used GenI engines, and you know it can handle alot more power than a budget 2 bolt 350.
