There is a reverse-input drum and a 2-4 band. Hard to see how either would break but it's good that it works.

ok, put trans in last night. Truck shifts into reverse, first, and second just fine, however it wont upshift into third at all or fourth. I called the trans shop that fixed it under warranty and he told me to drop the pan and replace the dr side shift cylinoid. Does this sound right? I looked at the 4l60e diagnosis list and it says if there is no 3rd or 4th that the 3-4 clutchs are no good. Any opinions. I would take the truck down but they are across town and a tow would be some $. Btw, there are no check engine codes. Need some help from those who know, thanks in advance.
Could try and see if that fixes it. They do go out sometimes.
update,
with only first and second gear, I drove it one last time to circle K on the corner, still no 3rd or 4th. When I left for home, I felt it hit 3rd....so I kept driving and to my surprise, it began to work just fine. All gears, tow mode, good on all. About 200 - 300 miles since build and it feels strong. Maybe the shift cyliniod was hanging up, idk. Just glad I didnt have to r&r again. Thanks for all the input, suggestions.
A few things could have happened there. the valves for the shift solenoids are bad about getting hung if they just wiped the valve body down in the parts washer and blew it out. after a few strokes of the solenoid it could have built enough pressure to break loose. Just keep an eye on it for the next couple of days to be sure its ok. and dont forget to check the fluid again after a day or two just to be sure!
You are going to have nothing but problems with that tranny since you fragged the band and reverse drum. Where do you think all those parts and pieces went? ALL THROUGH YOUR TRANNY! Your solenoids are hanging up because there is shit in your fluid that is not suppose to be there. If that fluid was burnt just like you mentioned then your clutches are burnt as well. Better start saving up for that rebuild kit and for gods sake find someone that has some experience/specialized tools with the 4l60e so you dont get to "practice" on yours all by yourself! Not trying to down you....but if you want a dependable tranny its best not to learn on your own tranny with no guidance. You wont know if you are making a mistake until AFTER you install the tranny and it burns up immediately or has problems.
By all means learn the 4l60e....then you can help someone out down the road or rebuild yours next time around....125K+ miles later if its built right. Mine has 135k+ on its first rebuild.
