Maybe for the Fact that "I can do it".
But I still think that the 454 with a head/cam swap will get nice numrbers near or pass a L18, and if drive ability is what you want get there a stand alone injection system !!!
There are tons of options.
I understand perfectly the new school in the old iron......I did one my self. (lsx454 in a 69 Camaro)
But in you case you are not throwing the stone that far !!! IMHO

i say do it, but like said earlier there is alot of aftermarket performance for those, so if wanting to keep it stock i say do it man good luck.

I've got a line on a couple decent 8.1's. Bidding on a really low miles (less than 1k) one on ebay. No accessories, harness or ecu with that one though. A friend has a complete with everything 8.1 w/66k that i could get for $12-1300. The hunt continues.

Old post, But I'm bringing it back to life. I got out of the Army, made it back home to California and just happened to be in the right place at the right time for a screamin deal on an '03 8.1 w/50k'ish miles. Complete with everything- harness, computer, all accessories/brackets, manifolds- everything. And it was basically given to me. Yeehaaa! Something to be said for knowing the right people. :)

And yes, I know the intake has been flipped. It was originally going in a rock crawling/race car in a rear engine configuration. :)
Anyone lookin for a '92 TBI 454?

Very nice. I've read probably the same build threads you have. From what I can tell, its 8.1 is just a torque monster. Modern fuel injection will probably keep fuel milage the same as the tbi setup, but I'm betting drivibility will be much better than the old setup. And it is cool, I dig it.

I've got a buddy that swapped one in his 89 1ton. He took out a mild 454 and he said the 8.1 made it look like a small block power wise. He pulls a stock trailer loaded with no problems at all.
