Good. From your questions, I am presuming you haven't torn into a gear swap before. I would give a bunch of tips, but your teacher should know.
If not:
--the ring gear bolts are reverse thread.
--put the pinion in the freezer for about 15 minutes and the new bearing in the oven for 15 minutes at 185 degrees (or use a torch to heat it up a little) when installing new bearings without a press.
--make sure to have an extra crush sleeve laying around.
--if the teacher isn't good enough to feel the backlash with this hands, you might need a backlash gauge to get proper pinion depth.
na he my teacher is pretty good he worked at gm for 20 years doing transmissions, drivetrain, and diesel motors, i tore aparrt a transmission and he came in and put it together in like 5 min without even seeing me take i appart...if i do the gears now will i have to buy a new crush ring when i get the posi setup
yes you will, you need a new one every time you take the old one out, treat it like a torque to yield bolt
No. You will just be removing the carrier and removing the ring gear. You will not need to reset the pinion. But I would still go and put mustard on the gears and check the drive/coast teeth patterns once the new carrier is installed.
He is talking about just replacing the carrier.
