I know what you mean about the hitch thing. we made a custom hitch for my buddy's when we did his body lift. we fabbed it to look exactly like the factory one. had to arc weld it all though. it held up towing his jeep to moab and back so I figure it's perty strong.
One way we got around the hitch issue with my buddy's truck was he bought a 2" reciever (a piece of 2" ID steel tubing would be fine too) and welded it to the V gap that is visible with the bumper raised to create a false hitch receiver. He put a billet bow tie hitch cover in the false receiver that stayed there at all times. It was cheap, easy, worked great, and made the actual hitch practically unnoticeable.
