The engine is a legal swap, it's the PCM controlling it that will need to be upgraded to at least a 2005 model. That will probably require swapping the intake setup to a DBW throttle body.

thats interesting ive never heard u must have the same year pcm as the truck. i guess i wouldnt care cuz i dont live in a strict area for that kinda stuff.
Your best thing to do would be to call the referee station in Irving and ask them what you can do and still get it inspected. My 92 with 93 LT1 engine would not pass the sniffer test and they sent me there for final testing. They gave me a free pass for that year since I spent $300 trying to get it to pass. Contact your local inspection station for the number if you can't find the number in the phone book.
ok sounds good... why wouldnt it pass the sniffer... dosnt seem like a diffrent ngine other than what the truck comes with would cause it to do that... was it because it was obd 1?
Mine didn't pass the sniffer because the cat was blown out. I found that out later. I'd never heard of a cat disintigrating before. I was changing the exhaust system to a new configuration and noticed the cat was totally hollow. :whack:
dang that blows..... 300 bucks because of a blown cat... dang haha
Ok so in your case, the year of the engine doesn't make any difference, but the PCM, wiring harness, and throttle body type will. If you plan on going with a DBW setup, you'll have to get the correct throttle body, PCM, and harness, and you'll have to go to a DBW gas pedal and TAC module. The other issue to consider is whether or not you'll be able to get cruise control to work. I think there's some cruise components that have to be changed too. The 03+ V6 trucks are a PITA because the V8's are electronic throttle control, whereas the V6's are still cable.
its much easier to buy a v8 truck and just swap to the 6L. That would be my suggestion. Put your truck back to stock and then trade it off for a V8 and then put the 6L in it. The 6L long block will be compatible with emission regulations for TX that way.
