how can you tell the difference between these two motors? what do you need to look for?

LQ4 has dished pistons (better for forced induction - lower compression), LQ9 are flat top (more compression). Not sure if there are other differences. There's no reason to go with an LS2 given the price and availability of the LQ's and ease of install & modification.
ok, is there any way of telling them apart without taking off the heads to look at the pistons?
Take a spark plug out and look down through the opening...

no they both have 317's
i guess i will have to pull a plug and try to look at the piston.
I was told the LQ9 had LS6 heads.
The LS2 has LS6 heads, casting number 243. LQ9/LQ4 has 317s as mentioned.
Thought the LQ9 rods were different than the LQ4? Different material?
Full floating vs pressed fin piston pin is what I thought.
