4.88 aren't really weaker. You just have to buy quality gears. 5.0+ gears are used all the time in drag racing with engines pulling over 1000 HP. It's all about quality and price. The leverage against the pinion gear is increased, that is why failures occur on higher numerical gears.

I had 4.56 in my '66 with a 31 inch tire. When the bearing went out I had 4.10 put in and I couldn't tell the differance, at the time it was pushin' 450hp

Well I have already ordered them. Thanks for all the info. As far as hp rating, I have headers, soon to be nelson tuned with hot tune 93 octane, soon to be 4.56's , K&N cai , also just purchased servo kits, and will be putting a 2800 stall. That'll be pretty much it. I will be pulling a twenty foot bullet bass boat from here to toledo bend pretty often so the 4.56s shouldn't be a problem. Once the motor goes and my extended warranty ,there is no telling what I will do. Maybe a 6.0 swap with a beefier trans. :thumb:
