First time swap. LQ9 into 95 OBS

ok thanks for the input. ive been looking for some on craigs/ebay/summit/s&P. looks like the going rate is about 150 for a setup... honestly i think thats rediculous just for an oil pan. so ima gonna keep looking and hope someone here is willing to trade..... well see. i have a few other issues to deal with that arent as bad but gotta tend to none the less. its frustrating, but definately enjoyable. all i can say is that if you are the kind of person that wants it done yesterday with no issues, DO NOT ATTEMPT A SWAP!! haha

i just hate to see the motor in there and know that i have to pull it again... SUCKS!!! is there a smiely for "palm to the forhead"???

Man, that really sucks. It's always something. Just for craps and giggles, I also checked Flea bay and was surprised at how much the Fbody and similar pans were going for. Unbelievable.

Yes,I agree. My swap has come to a stand still as of now,it's costing more due to the oil pan and some other parts needed. Hopefully it will pick back up soon.

Do not get the hotrod oil pan, which is the h3 pan. It still hangs below the frame. Stick with the "ls1 pan and be done worrying. I'm in this same boat.

well today i figured while im waiting to find a oil pan id go ahead and start fitting things up where they are going to go before i pull the motor so i can just hook everything up when it goes back in.

i was able to get the newer airbox in there. man was that a tight fit! wanted to put it in so the referee doesnt trip on something else not being CARB approved. set the hood on to check for clearance and with it in its locked position, there is about 1/4" between the top of the tube and the hood bracing....

obviously putting the airbox there i had to relocate the battery tray. figured theres no reason to hunt down a driver side when i can just modify mine. so cut the two brackets off and re welded them in their mirrored positions. worked out nicely. ill paint it tomorrow. and you cant see but i tucked the air compressor for my helper bags under the tray too. only took a couple hours.

also had to relocate the overflow tank. its temporary. i dont like it there but it will work for now. im gonna find a slim design and hide it somewhere.

tomorrow i will be tidying up some more things in the compartment and dropping the tank to swap the sending unit and hook up the wires to it. that will probably take most of the day. more pics up tomorrow.

worked on it today. but was only able to work on the fuel tank. ran into a few issues. only one major one tho and that almost made me flip.... i thought i was gonna have to buy another fuel tank!!!

EEEEEEEVVVVVVIIIIIDEEEENTTTTLLLLYYYYYYY.......... GM thought it was a good idea to change the size of the opening on top of the tank rather than just keep it the same for the next 3 years untill they changed body styles..... the new assembly will not fit!!!! not even close. luckily nobody was around at the time i tried to install it. there might have been some injuries.

so after a little rant, i sat down and studied both assemblies to see if i could come up with anything. and i think i did. my dilema was that i needed a higher pressure pump AND a pressure sensor which the old unit doesnt have. but i had luckily already bought the 381 pump that i thought i was gonna need before i realized i could just use the pump from the newer assembly which i asked about a few pages back. so i knew i could install that. problem 1 solved. now on to the pressure sensor. the old unit uses a vent hose that goes to the gas cap to relieve fuel pressure when the tank heats up on OBD1 vehicles. OBD2 has a pressurized tank which eliminates that hose and now has a pressure sensor. BAM!!! thats when it hit me. use the vent hose to supply the pressure sensor. so i removed the sensor from the new unit, got some arb fittings to adapt it from 5/8 to 1/4" and some fuel hose and put the sensor on the end. i will have to mount the sensor in the framerail somewhere. but as long as there are no leaks, this should now make the tank pressurized and i dont see how the referee could care thats its not mounted on the unit itself. it should still read the pressure just fine. heres the new rig... looks kinda ghetto but i think it should work. Please tell me if im not seeing something

i know this doesnt apply to most of you but since there is VERY LITTLE info on CARB legal swap "how to's" im trying to keep my thread as detailed as possible on how to hook up all the nessesary smog equipment for anyone else trying to do this kinda swap since im going through hell and back to figure it out on my own.

ill be working more on the tomorrow. hope to get the vapor canister, vent solenoid and wiring all mounted and hooked up so that the tank portion is finished. i hate trying to crawl under this damn truck!!

got some more done on it today. let me tell you im BEAT!!! even with the truck jacked up, its still a pain in the ass to work under it!!! im so glad i got the fuel part of it done!!

here is my modified setup to fit my truck. im missing the filter for the vent solenoid. i have it but i cant for the life of me find it... that is really frustrating me cuz i dont know where its at!!! does anyone know why GM would put that stupid 4 inch connector extension on the vent solenoid rather than having the harness plug directly into it? i dont get it.

heres the canister and solenoid mounted (without filter for now). found a nice safe spot for it by the tank. the original was up front but the escalade had it mounted by the tank so i put it there so the ref doesnt say anything about it not being in the "original location"

hey mickey. question for you since your the pro on PS pumps. i was thinking instead of capping the top nipple, cant i just use a T-fitting from the gear box return and feed both nipples? in my mind thats better since it was designed to have oil coming in on both nipples? i feel better doing it that way. should be safe if not better right? maybe you might want to do the same?
