Time for new stuff

Well about 5 months ago now my old system got jacked. :sad:
I had an Alpine Type R 12...ok that was really the only thing that got stolen...powered by a Rockford BD 1000.1. The reason it got jacked is because I had it sitting on the seat...I know ghetto. Thats the only place it could fit with the seat down. I have been looking for a good system to do. I want to keep my current amp but want to get new sub(s). I was thinking about a single 12 again...but I was also thinking about the shallow mount and doing 2 12's bolted down under the seat. What I want to know is what brand of the shallow mount people would recomen and why.

JL audio... Thats the only subs i have ever owned i think they have the best sound quality but still put out good db if u were wanting to do sound off... heard many diff subs but still think JL is the only way to go

Yes they do but plan on spending some money. I am taking out my center console and making a new one with a diamond d6 inside of it. That may be another option for you.

Yeah I had this idea to have virtually a center console all the way back...cut out the middle of the back seat and have a console full of subs...but that is way too much monies. Why do you say that 2 of the JL shallow mount 12's will be a lot of money?

what year truck and cab size do you have.

IMO, i think that they are a good all around choice, moderate cost, fits perfectly in your truck, and i have 3 trophies to say that they hit loud.

2 first and 1 second. i have a rcsb, with 1 10, with 500 watt TMA amp.

I think the jl shallows are expensive.

The jl w5 13 is an expensive lil booger and I think you would be more satisfied in doing some higher wattage 10's. I myself have always always ALWAYS been a fan of 12's until I installed my first set of diamond audio 10's in a truck like ours. They are a bit on the pricey side but they are well worth the money I promise. I have installed everything from kicker to jl to Rockford and eclipse to diamond audio. Diamond audio takes the gold hands down IMO. I currently have 2 D3 10's rated at 400rms each on my Rockford t500.1bd which had a birth sheet saying it ran 725 rms at 1 ohm and it sounds pretty close to my bedcut in my white truck. They still don't have the earthquake style pounding bass that the 2-p2 12 dvc's in the bandpass bedcut had but they will surprise you for being 10's. They are in a pre-fab downfire box on an amp that doesn't quite hit rms for the subs and they sound awesome. Also, the jl shallow is a 500 watt rms sub. IMO I wouldn't use shallows in an application that didn't need shallow subs.

I'm starting to realize that it's not gonna work with the shallow mounts...my amp just puts out too much power for them to handle. The test sheet says it's putting down around 1300 rms and most of those little guys can handle about 400-500 rms. :( So I guess I will have to do 2 10's that can take a lot of power and build a custom box for them. :(

If you have the room allow me to reccomend these. I was blown away with the sound quality & loudness compared to the Kicker CVR. These have an amazing excursion also, and very reasonably priced.

they are built about half an hour southeast of dallas, tx. if you go onto the site and send them an email. they might be able to put you in contact with a more local supplier than texas.

Just got a quote from the ONLY Diamond dealer around me...
2 D6 10's and a forward fire box for under the seat comes to a grand total of $823.13 out the door.

And worth every penny. I have had everything from rockford, eclipse, and even klicker. Diamonds are by far the loudest and by far the best sound quality that I have owned.

I understand what you mean you get what you pay for when it comes to car audio. I just believe in stretching your dollar out the most you can.

Damn, I could have sold you my old ported box with two Rockford 500w RMS DVC 10's....oh well. Sold on Craigslist not too long ago.

I just ordered a new box from subthump.com, they have a nice 8/10" box with an amp rack or a deep box for two 12's. It's all downfire but I've heard nothing but good thing about the quality and fit of their boxes.

I'm toning mine down...going from two ported 10's on a RF Power 1500bd amp to two JL 8w1v2's in a sealed box off a RF Power 351m amp.

Anytime you ask a question like this its going to be smoothered with people pushing whatever brand they run as the best.

The only thing I can suggest is go and listen to some, see what you think is best. Granted nothing is going to sound the same in the store as it does in a vehicle. But what sounds good to one person could be crap to another, its too subjective. Just like the whole which is louder question...

Totally agree with you. I will say that I will take the majority of what these guys say about the Diamonds very seriously cuz they mainly listen to similar types of music that I do and have proven to have an extensive knowledge about the audio industry. I HAVE heard diamonds in a friends Titan...he had 2 8's I think...which were pretty under powered if you ask me only 450 watts I believe...and it still sounded good. Not too much bass that you can't listen to rock or country and not get any words but enough that if you wanted a lot of bass the capibilites were there.

klicker and Xplode are big EVERYWHERE!!! Junk if you ask me, Ive installed just about every brand of car audio and I will always stick with Eclipse for radios or cheap mids and highs, Diamond for any subs, speakers, amps, and rockford for subs and amps too. JL is good but Im still not that impressed. Im dying to get rid of these MTX junkers that were left in my doors for some D6 convertibles.

My current system is all Alpine except the subs. Front doors are SPR-17LS 6 1/2" 4 ohm R-type components w/ crossover. Rear doors are SPR-17LP 6 1/2" 4 ohm R-type coax 2-way. Amp for the doors is MRV-F345 75W RMS X4 @ 4 ohms. Sub amp is MRD-M605 400W RMS mono @ 4 ohms. Entire system was built around Nov '05.

Sub box is the Avalanche-specific JL midgate Stealthbox. 2 12" subs, but don't remember the specific model of the JL subs.

So yeah, I'd love to replace my blown Alpines with Diamonds. I just looked on their site for the first time while typing this though, and they're only rated at 50-60W RMS......I need more than that I think. I'm putting 75W RMS to the doors.

I'm on a budget, looking for deals to repair my hurt stereo. Sadly, it looks like the Diamonds are out unless I'm missing something. Suggestions?

I run my Diamond D661's off a 250.2 if that makes you feel any better. They've been holding up for 3 years.

Wow I think there is both some good and bad information in here.

First of all Diamond Audio D6s can be had for quite cheap. You can get them brand new off ebay for $130 each shipped. I used to have a pair of 12" d6s and even though the box was grossly under sized they still sounded great.

Resonant Engineering also makes some great subs. Even their lower end stuff sounds pretty decent.

JL has good stuff, so it's hard to go wrong with them, but in my opinion they are way overpriced. I would compare them to Dynatech headers. They are some of the best in the business, but there are other great options for half the price. The TW5's are the shallow mounts people are likely talking about. They have like a 3" mounting depth but sound like sub 3 times its size.

Kicker even has some good stuff, but they are better known for SPL rather than SQ.

I currently just have one Rockford Fosgate P3 shallow mount. It's nothing special, but it is clean and crisp which is exactly what I was looking for.

If you are worried about the amp, just turn the gain down. It definitely isn't going to hurt anything. It's far worse to clip the audio turning the gain too high than it is to turn the gain down and have the amp produce less power.

If it were me I would buy the deep mount from subthump.com, then buy two 10" Diamond Audio D6 subs and have a solid setup for under $500 shipped.

I just searched eBay and the "brand new" D6's you speak of for 130 shipped are REFURBISHED...thats not new to me. I think I will stick to buying directly from a CREDITED dealer off of the Diamond Audio site.

Also, D6's and D661's are different.

They are brand new and not refurbished.

I suppose if you want to buy them from a brick and mortar shop expect to pay more. The average price online was about $210 per sub. Either way you should be able to have a great box and sub for around $650 or less.
