EDIT: Turbo Project Resurrected

Figured this would be a good place to start listing and keeping track of what I need/may need to do for the turbo install. If any of you experts think of anything, please post it up. My questions are in red...



STUFF I NEED OR NEED TO DO:

1.) Relocate PCM (due to location of air filter on turbo kit per the original owners post). Suggestions? Pictures? Below is a photo of the installed turbo encroaching into the battery and apparently the PCM area as well:

2.) Previous owner mentioned water in the intercooler. Anyone ever have that problem? Would a petcock valve (or two) be ok in the bottom corner(s) of the intercooler? $10 from Summit (or any hardware store I would assume):

3.) Looks like the kit/filter also interferes with the looped portion of the upper radiator hose. I'm just going to use some PVC elbows and try to find some straight lengths of radiator hose (do auto parts stores carry the stuff in bulk?). This is a picture of when the previous owner had it installed, you can see how it encroaches on the radiator hose:

1.) Got two 25' rolls of 2" exhaust wrap off eBay:

2.) Got a new set of Taylor 409 Pro Race Wires (10.4mm) and NGK TR6 Plugs:

3.) Got a Taylor aluminum battery relocation box including disconnect switch (thanks Billy!!!):

I have a battery dissconnect if you need it.
I have a Summit catch can new in the box.
I have a NHRA approved battery relocate box for sale, but its not a cheapy.
Taylor Cable 48103 - Taylor Battery Relocation Kits - summitracing.com
If that link doesnt work, the part number is 48103 by Taylor. It lists for $159.
The drain in the intercooler is a good idea. If you get water or oil in there, its nice to be able to drain it. You might see if you can find something in aluminum so you can have it tig'd in.
You will need to cap off the big vacume line from the throttle body. The line from the valve cover you can run to the catch can.
STS sells a little check valve that you can put in the pcv line. The pcv will not stop the boost at times. Not really made for that if you know what I mean.

Moze, you need a set of NGK TR6 plugs. Gap them at .030.
Part number 4177 from O'Riellys; about $16.00

If there is no exhaust wrap left on the down pipe, you will need some so you dont cook things.

Yeah those NGKs are a good idea. I should have done that from the get go. It did run a tad bit rougher just at idle, but it got rid of alot of KR I was seeing. Not to thread hijack, but when is a catch can a good idea? Like how much boost? How much boost do you plan on running moze

Don't have a clue on how much boost to run. Still learning buddy. :)

A catch can is good anytime. Helps catch all the crap that gets sent back to your intake manifold and doesn't get burnt like it's supposed to. Or filters.

Mozey, we should be able to "Southern Engineer" most things when it comes to building the kit. Things are going to get pretty cramped under there, so we need to wrap everything before we get it installed. I know it will take longer, but we could do a mock-up install of everything to make sure we get the necessary clearance before we start tightening everything down. And what is going to happen with the injectors and fuel rails? I say keep the fuel rail and get injector spacers with the FAST 60 lb. injectors. That way we don;t have to waste time messing with splicing into the injector wiring harness...

As for the intercooler, I am guessing it is an air-to-air unit? The water mentioned is probably just condensation in the lines. Yes, a petcock valve will let the water to drain out. The lowest location along the intercooler hose is preferred.

Do you have fittings for the oil feed and drain? You'll have to drill and tap the oil pan somewhere for the oil drain.

How about vacuum lines for the wastegate and blowoff valve?

You've got your work cut out for you putting the turbo on the driver's side like that. Is that DanaliHD's old kit from pt.net? I will never understand why the shop he took it to did it on that side when there is 10x more room on the passenger side....good luck!

exhaust wrap sucks ass putting on when your under the truck. i got that fiberglass **** ALLLL over me and I only did like 3 feet of wrap.

Billy said the wrap should be done wet...maybe that helps?

And yes, it's DanaliHD's kit. I know it's tight over there. But as long as it works...

I'm supposed to get the stuff today, so we'll see what's included in it.

being wet does help. It also bakes on stiff. We typically use 100' on a truck with the STS, overlapping 1" every go-round.

I hope it works for you, that's like the old livern kit, it worked, but it was a PITA to work on and change plugs, maybe it's easier than that kit was. Just kind of odd a single turbo would be on that side, kind of tight fitting.

once you get all your stuff together, add another $1000 dollars in misc stuff you'll need. It always happens and you're getting into a new field, forced induction gets ex$pensive quick!

Yeah I think the previous owner had mentioned the difficulty with changing plugs. I got new ones so hopefully I won't have to worry about it for a while.

Hey - do you remember about two years ago when I was in your driveway and just got Pin 42 turned on for the e-fans and the speed limiter removed? And you were trying to talk me into a tune? But I said I couldn't and left and got about 2 miles down the road and came back and got one? Then you were trying to talk me into a cam and converter, and I laughed and said no way - I'm not out to break any records? Then I got a cam and converter? Anyway - just struck me funny. Seriously though, he's what's gonna happen.

After a lot of extra parts you'll need to get your truck running, something will leak or break. You'll go through a few sets of spark plugs.
Then a few wires will burn, so you might as well buy good ones with heat wraps.
Then something else will break, you'll fix it if it's external. If it's the engine, you'll decide to do a forged one, then more frustration and about another $6K.
After that, The turbo won't be big enough, injectors too small, fuel pressure too low, fuel rails too restrictive, hahaha, having fun yet?
Or, you might think the cam isn't right, so it's time to change that, "oh damn, i have to pull the turbo to install the cam!"
About the time you get it running strong, that weak ass 60e will break, hopefully it doesn't damage too much when it happens.
Time to buy slicks and lighter rims.
Another trans just too a sh!t.

It's an endless cycle, so just prepare yourself and have lots of patience.

Hopefully none of this happens to you , lol, but I see it quite a bit, so more than one of these are probably going to bite you in the ass, it got me, haha.

80mm is not big enough? Maybe too big for little Mozey...being this is his first turbo and all...

Moze, make sure to get 60 lb. injectors and maybe we could put on an adjustable aftermarket FPR on there so we can guarantee that the fuel will be there to match the new amounts of forced air...

SO TRUE.......... This is my story, lol... all except the trans, but Im sure that will change with the GTK850....... I have my eye on a new Lenco anyway....

Tyler...the guy sent me the 60# Ford Injectors - should have them early next week...not real familiar with the use of them, but whatever. Thought about buying the ones Billy recommended off of eBay and selling the ones he's sending.

Enjoy the addiction, buy a few parts. Don't expect too much and don't live on the edge. Go easy on the parts and tune conservatively. Play when you must and cruise when you can. Live life one quarter mile at a time.

Yeah there a bunch of v-clamps with it, but I'll pick up some extras in case any break. I'd rather return some than have to run and get them the day of.

OK, what about odds and ends? Coolant lines? oil pickup line? Oil return line? Keep in mind there are no "givens" (as far as "Moze should know that" - because I probably don't...lol). And Billy - did you say I wouldn't need that gauge? I do need some kind of a boost gauge right?

I thnk your gonna need more than just one roll of 50' of exhaust wrap. I used a bunch. and I didnt even do the manifolds either
