i think someone told me once when i was lookin into gettin a posi... its an 8.5 inch 10 bolt rearend
but then again i know nothing
YES, YOU NEED A KIT. IT SHOULD COME WITH BEARINGS GASKETS AND A CRUSH SLEEVE. ITS BETTER TO GO ALL NEW SINCE THE UNITS NEW. JUST ADDED INSURANCE. I AM FIXING TO DO AN AUBURN DIFF, BUT I THINK I AM GOING TO KEEP THE 3 73'S NOW THAT THE STALL COVERTER IS WORKING PROPERLY.

You have a 8.6" but they call it an 8.5". They are interchangable, the gears that is. The only difference between the OBS carrier and the NBS carrier is the size of the bearings. You're gonna love that posi! Get the master install kit so that everything is new, not reused. Start out setting your pinion depth by installing the shim that is in on the pinion onto your new pinion. Most times that is the perfect depth.
i had to get one when i put on the 4:10's and eaton posi unit
master install kit it is.
thanks
That will come with all new bearings and races, maybe a shim assortment for the carrier and some gear marking paste to check the contact pattern of the teeth. You'll have to press the bearing off your old pinion gear to get the shim I mentioned earlier. The only thing missing from a master install kit will be axle seals and new axle bearings. Those outer axle bearings are pricey and not to fun to install. It pretty much takes a slide hammer you pull those out and I wouldn't mess with replacing them unless you see damage on the bearings or the axles. I would suggest buying new axle end seals and replacing those while you're at it, you don't want to go back in there for a few dollars worth of leaking seals. If you need help getting the pinion bearing off, let me know, I can press it off for you and press it back onto the new one if you want to drive up here to the Denton/Corinth area, assuming you are going to do the work yourself.
