whipple supercharger or turbo

the desciption says it all, I found a nice whipple unit for sale used and was wondering if it would be better to have then a turbo. I have been looking at allens kit and also sts kits. I am going to drive this ls1 powered truck daily and drive it hard, all your input will be appreciated. Guy has the complete whipple kit for 2200, the supercharger has been freshly rebuilt. Thanks in advance for all your help. I would like to know benifits of both, what power should I expect.....2000 vs 4000 seems pretty good

whipple is nice, and it has its benefits, but its somewhat limited as far as psi u can run. turbo gives u the ability to go huge, u can run more psi with it. theres a lot of people that can tell u the benefits of each one, and bud8fan has had both so he&#39;ll be able to tell u which one he likes best. most people on here run turbo, but either way ur getting a great product. :thumb:

I also thought about a procharger, I can get a fairly good deal on one of them as well. I did hear that a turbo is kinda finicky on the street, may produce different hp at different times, they said it may even clatter the valves at times. I want this truck to be extremely streetable. It is an ls1 conversion with a built 4l60 and a 3600 vigilante. How about gas mileage, what kind of mpg drop will i expect to see from each of these under normal driving. I know it will be a crazy drop beating on it....but just driving a 50 mile strait?

if they werent streetable people on here wouldnt have them. some peoples gas mileage has gone up on here, ull have to see if someone has a similar application with a turbo and see what they get mpg wise. last i read they r working on the intercooler system. there&#39;s no wa to really know, but id just call trick or allen and see what they think as far as when it will be available.

What&#39;s the body style of your truck?

I have a whipple on my tahoe. It&#39;s my daily driver, and I love it. I average about 12mpg in the city, if I behave, which is rare, so it&#39;s normally closer to 10. I did see a noticeable improvement on the highway though. If I cruise at 70, I can get 20mpg. I think that&#39;s pretty good for a truck this heavy. I started with a freshly rebuilt kit, like you described, then I got a little carried away. I ended up spending a week at Allen&#39;s shop getting the big stuff taken care of. Then when it was all done, I turned around and drove it 800 miles back home. I think it really depends on what your goals are. If you want big hp, then definately get the turbo. If you&#39;d rather have instant torque, the whipple might be the better option. The turbo will be much easier to upgrade later down the road.

The Whipple is a good kit but I don&#39;t know if it could make over 10-12 psi on an Ls1 efficently. But if your motors not built you won&#39;t want to go over 10psi on a daily driver any way. The Whipple also is a nonintercooled charger so you would have to go with meth injection (which could be a problem if you run out of meth under hard drive) or as many have done before fab up an intercooler.

A turbo is a good way to. The STS and the new front mount kit have tons of upgrades like an intercooler and bigger turbos for more boost.
The only problem that I know of with the STS in the oil is pumped from your rear mounted turbo back into your oil pan. ( So what happens when your pump breaks. A turbo can&#39;t spin with out oil and your motor has to have oil to so what do you do if that happens. Theres is a oil pump alarm so you will know if it happens. but then what? Call a tow truck I guess) The new front mount kit is gravity feed so no worries there.

If it was my money I would buy a turbo kit hands down&#33;&#33;&#33;&#33;&#33;&#33;&#33;&#33;&#33;& #33;
It&#39;s more money but in the long run I think it would be worth it.

thanks for all your help guys, I really like the way things sound for the sts, just because I wont have to deal with all the underhood temperatures, Istill want to have a/c and everything efficiently whether or not this affects that iono. I dont think I will run any more than 9psi on whatever I choose because this thing will be drove daily and abused daily. Is an intercooler reccomended for the sts? The kits are priced for 4000 right now, wonder how much more i will have to spend to have it complete....what I am saying is: what are the neccesary options I will have to have. The kits sold on ebay have a boost controller with them at this time.

Definitely plan on an intercooler.If you plan on 9psi, 60# injectors ( I have 42# injectors for sale if interested), fuel pump kit (from magnacharger), Nelson tune, Built transmission - FLT, or atleast a shift kit and servos. Boost guage, O2 Wideband - AEM wideband

I also wouldn&#39;t worry about a boost controler. Just install a 9# spring then your right foot is your boost controller. :burnout:

Turbo all the way&#33; If you&#39;re going to go forced, there&#39;s nothing better than a turbo in my opinion. They must be good because 18 wheelers used to use roots type blowers but went to turbos and I don&#39;t think there is anything on the road that can match the torque of a big rig.

Foggy got it right, you&#39;ll need good fuel supply and a way to monitor a/f ratio.
A shift kit will keep that trans together&#33;

As for an intercooler, if you&#39;re planning on any long runs, long run meaning a pull through more than two gears, get the intercooler.
Those intake temps get very hot. The hotter than intake temps, the less timing, which equals less power.

Cool intake temps for any charger is a must.
