Exhaust questions...

OK, the Thorley headers are in. Billy used the stock Y-pipe minus the cats. That runs back to a single 3" pipe which runs into a single in/single out 3" Spin Tech muffler. The 3" pipe out of the muffler is dumped right before the rear axle.

The truck sounds AWESOME at idle. I love it. But when you get on it (anything much over 2k rpm) it's what I would call obnoxious. Pretty loud and not really a mellow tone.

So my question is: Is that a result of not having the cats in there? Would adding the cats mellow it out some?

I image not having cats compounds the noisebut being dumped before the axle will also. You could try and take it over the axle and dump it there and see if that helps.

I felt kind the same when I install my exhaust system, but give it a week or so, and u'll fall in love. Now they all now me when I'm near..LOL

going out the side or back with the tail pipe will only send the sound away from the truck and not have it bouncing under the truck which will make it where you can hear yourself inside the truck again!!!!
ohh and yes the removal of the cats makes it LOUDER!!!!!!

Mine was the same way, I put high flow cats in and it took the drone out a bit. Once you go loud, you always drive proud. Or you get a ticket... :rock:

I doubt the cats will make that much difference.

Some people say losing the cats gives it a tinny or a metallic sound. I added the Magnaflow cats before hearing it without, so I can't compare. I know mine was too loud for me under the truck.

Ive ridden in quite a few trucks/ls1&#39;s based cars with no cats and i agree with the fact that it does have that tin/metal sound. like no deep sound. its hard to explain but i agree with SC on the sound.

i think the cats will mellow it out some, and if nothing else, your worried about losing power. then go with cutouts before the cats.

It&#39;s only another foot and a half or so to go over the axle. I don&#39;t think that&#39;s going to cure the noise. The problem lies in when the exhaust is being pushed. For example, idling sounds awesome. You can feel the rumble in your chest. But then like some of the guys posted, and I couldn&#39;t think how to describe, when I get on it, it spunds "metallic". Somewhere between a ping and a bang. Almost like a small weak jackhammer going "pttttttttttttttttttttttt". No&#33; More like an impact wrench going "pttttttttttttttttt".

Do I know my way around the English language, or what?

Actually cruising isn&#39;t bad. It&#39;s not until I accellerate. Then it&#39;s just obnoxious. Which I&#39;ve already used for some idiot on their cell phone going 50 in the passing lane. I think he got the point after I kept revving it and drowning out his conversation. He finally moved over. :thumb:

I&#39;ll probably put the stock cats back in if they&#39;ll fit. If not, I&#39;ll have to find a short one. Any ideas on short cats anyone?

You know ive only got a v6, but ive got full exhaust including magnaflow cats dumped before the axle and ive got a really nice deep mellow sound to it, and without the cats its quite annoying and just has a reminisce to glass packs. I know it may burn some money in the pocket at looking into high flow cats, but you might actually be able to find that sound your looking for at getting the cats and not really lose too much with them. I dont know how they would work with longtubes but who knows.
