the valve cover gaskets on my 305 are pretty bad, leaking oil onto the manifolds and everything, so i bought a pair of rubber valve cover gaskets to replace the leakers. once i get the valve covers off, im going to either have to grind the surface or get all the crap off. but my main question is what is the pattern to use to tighten the bolts down. dont wanna get em back on then blow up because i didnt tighten them right.

Just gradually tighten them. Work one then the next then so on. Dont just tighten one all the way down and go to the next. The torque specs if i remember correctly is only like 12lbs. You will also want to check the surface for straightness with a straight edge. If the surface is all bent up it will not seal correctly. A wire wheel works good to remove rtv and gasket or a good wire brush after you scrape most of the gasket off.
