Instrument cluster swap
Okay, ive searched a lot and cannot find a actual write up of how to put a NBS cluster into a OBS truck. What is involved? Cutting and splicing of wires? I almost got a cluster from a 99 Silverado last weekend from the boneyard and was able to find the same year truck as mine, but it wouldnt fit, and there is a pigtail that attaches to the top. I really like the look of the newer style gauges plus id like to have everything function correctly.
BTW, my truck is a 98 Sierra with a 5.3/4l60e.

Why don't your gauges work properly? There have been countless 96-2000 GMT400 trucks with Gen3 engine/PCM's swapped into them.

The tach doesnt work right and cannot get the coolant gauge to read properly. I know I can get the pcm values reset, but I do not want to send out the pcm again. Plus I want the factory style trans temp gauge.

Ok-Got it. The trans temp gauge is a pretty nice added feature.

Nobody wants to give any hints on how they did the cluster swap?

I think I've only seen one real working cluster swap and I believe he used the harness and all from the newer truck. Everybody talks about doing it but it usually ends up being more trouble than it's worth. If your just wanting to do it to get all your gauges working that's probably not the easiest way. The tach and temp gauges are not hard fixes compared to a whole cluster swap. Just my .02

I've been researching this myself. Not sure what year your motor is? The research I've done is on the 2007 & newer gauge clusters. I'm not sure how much of the following is relevant to pre-2007. That said, you need to run a BCM. The BCM is the gateway between the low speed bus and the high speed bus. The cluster is on the low speed bus and all of the data it needs is on the high speed bus. I've seen at least one thread where it was done. A lot of work and troubleshooting, but doable. If your main goal is just the tranny temp, there are several easier ways to go. http://www.aeroforcetech.com/ http://www.scangauge.com/products/scangaugeii/
