Trunnion Upgrade

Hey guys this has probobly been done before but I figured I would do it anyways. These are goin in my 91 5.3 Camaro were working on so here it goes.

This is the part number I used for the upgrade.

Heres the stock rocker in all its glory.

And heres the comp trunnion upgrade minus the snap rings.

Heres the tools that I used. A small bench vise, a hammer, small 3/8 extension that I found in the backyard with a 9/16 socket, 21mm or 7/8 socket to place under the rocker.

Then u place the rocker with the two flat spots facing the socket, grab the extension with a 9/16 socket on top of the rocker, then u tap it slightly with the hammer until the old trunnion pops out. It should come out easily if not make sure you are centered over the bottom socket.

Heres what you should have when all the old crap out.

Then you grab the new caged bearing and place it with the lettering facing up. Hell it even says up the bearing so you cant mess this step up.

Make sure u place the bearing on the rocker as straight as possible then place the rocker in the vice and press it in untill its flush.

Grab the new trunnion and place it in the rocker before you press the other bearing in.

Then grab one of the washers that are included with the kit and center it over the side that has the bearing pressed in.

Turn the rocker over and grab the second bearing and place it with the lettering facing up over the trunnion as shown.

Place the second included washer on top of the unpressed bearing and this will press the bearing without pushing the other side out.

There you have it. Upgraded trunnion without worry of any needle bearings popping out. I didnt install the snap rings because I didnt have snap ring pliers small enough for the snap rings but I will install them before they get bolted on to the cylinder head.

Hered the a close up of the bearings that are know to fall into the motor without notice. You do NOT want these in there. You cant tell from the pic but they measure between 1/8 to 1/4 inch long so they are pretty small.

This s my first write up of any sort but I figured I would give it a try. If the pictures suck thats because i took them with my phone. Hopefully this will help anybody who wants to tackle this. It took me all but 20 minutes to do the other 15 rockers.

Good write up. And the Comp-Cams is one of a few trunion upgrades out there. This gives us an idea of how to do it. How long does one take?

It takes about 30 mins to do the entire upgrade. I've been doing alot of these at the shop latley. Pretty simple and well worth it

Summit racing has their own house-brand trunnion upgrade kit with snap-rings that are beefier than Comp's. I've heard of two stories where people had a snap-ring break.
