Boosting a 6.0L
Question. Researching to swap in a 6.0L from an 04 GM into my 93 GM 1/2 ton. Got a separate forum to deal with the swap.
Adding a turbo has also caught my eye. I have seen kits from Procharger and simliar. My question is what other parts are key and/or suggested for adding a turbo kit outside of what is included with the kit (ie. plumbing, intercooler, wastegate, etc.)? I am only vaguely familiar with boost systems and would like to know more for the purpose of planning the entire build before hand so I'm back on teh road as soon as possible as I go to college full time and have 2 part time jobs.

Okay first off Procharger is a supercharger not a turbo. As for the turbo kit I would get in contact with Trick or Kbracing or Nelson Performance they all offer complete turbo kits. The only things you would need in addition to their kits is a tune, larger fuel injectors and higher flowing fuel pump.
-
Pardon me. I've heard the name Trick before and I've seen an engine build with some of their newer cylinder heads. I figured on the tune already. I just needed to knwo if I would have to go into the internals of the engine (such as the bottom end). Also, how can I determine a reasonable boost range? It's gonna be a daily driver so definitely nothin way up there. Mostly I'm looking for a kit to up my horsepower and help some with gas mileage, reason I'm not looking for anything extreme. Not even sure I'm gonna go this route.
Any tips?

It's all good man. We all have to start somewhere. Don't expect to see better MPG with a turbo. You won't need to do any internal mods if you keep the boost down. Although I would recommend swapping in a LS6 cam, valve springs, LS7 lifters and hardened pushrods. This will give you better reliability and the LS6 cam is a cheap good boost cam. I would say about 6lbs of boost will give you some great gains while not going crazy. Keep in mind this is gonna cost at least 5k

Hmm... LS6 cam and LS7 lifters in a LS1? How can I be sure they'll work? I'd rather not get something and put it in only to find it doen't work.
Also I've see procharger advertise better MPG with one of their systems. I can understand if you go crazy and all, btu the kit I was looking at was a mild.

If anything any kind of boost will give very very mild mileage gains. Maybe 1mpg on mild boost.
As for the valve train questions. Basically all LSx based motors have the same design. You are clearly very new to this type of modding. Welcome to ls1truck. On this site you will find some of the very very best in the game. More knowledge can be found here than several similar sites combined. A lot to be learned around here. Make good use of the search button and google. Most important read read read.
Yes LS6 cam and LS7 lifters work great in an LS1, but you have a 6.0 more than likely its an LQ4 or maybe a LQ9. It sounds to me as though you either need to learn a lot or let someone in the know give you some serious help on your build. All the parts I have mentioned will absolutely fit your project, but you are going to need some very specific fabrication for your build. I would recommend do this build a little at a time. Do the swap then add a few more supporting mods, before you even consider going FI. It is going to take time money and patience if you want to do it right the first time. I think you should be able to get it done. Good luck and ask more specific questions.

If you are looking to get better MPG, dont turbo it. Yes the MPG will improve, but you will not get more MPG do to the fact that no one that turbos a truck keeps their foot out of it. Safe boost levels are all in the eye of the person behind the wheel. 10-12 is usually safe, in most cases. You will need fuel system, ie. fuel pump, injectors at least. Built trans if you want it to stay alive. And its not if you will break something its when .
-
Actually, yes I am new to this from a knowledge/experience standpoint. That's the main reason I found this website. I'm not sure if I'm going to try the lq4 or the lq9. I am planning to get the motor, trans, and whatever else I can get from the local pull-a-part. I also have a friend I work with that said he'd direct me to a good shop when the time comes as it will probably be next summer before I can start. Right now I'm trying to get a basic game plan ironed together before I start.

Well simply put read read read read read. You have come to a place where the build you are describing has been done 100x before.
