Gear Ratio change on 4x4
I have a 2010 4x4 that I plan on doing a mild lift and 33's and want to change my gear ratio at the same time. Looking for a good write up on this since I have never set up a ring and pinion before. I have installed a powertrax style locker on a different truck and do have mechanical experience. Looking to go from 3.42 to 4.56 since I want some performance also out of the change. Anyone in NE ohio that has some experience and wants some beer to help guide me through in the spring when I do this would be awesome.

On my other computer I have favorited a detailed thread on how to regear the front diff. I found it on google, so if I forget to post it just do some searching and you should be able to find it.

do you have the 6l80e?
i have 35x1150 on my 2010 now still with stock gearing. I pull an enclosed trailer in the hills of PA with no issues. It actually cruises better with the bigger tires. If using the 4l60 its more of a issue but the gearing of the 6l80 really seems to help out. swapping the gears might not be something you want to do untill you test drive truck for a while.

4.56 for 33's is pretty steep. Especially if you have the 6 speed as George asked.
Stock tires usually run aright around 31.5/32''
Here is a breakdown of the diff, use a slide hammer to pull out the shafts. They are held in place much like a fwd car with the snap rings.

Thanks for the replies, I have the 4l60e 4 speed. I bought the truck new and have about 20k on it now. When pulling the boat or our 57 on the trailer right now it is border line and if I go to a 33 I didnt want to stress the drive train that much. I also wanted the performance bennifits of the steaper gear. I ran it through a calc and looks like 4.56 with 33s should put me about 2200 rpm at 70mph wouldn't be to bad. I don't use the truck as a commuter and a 4.10 was listed around 2000 at 70 mph.

I have a set of GM 4.56's for the 8.6 rear I'm looking to get rid of if you don't already have a set.
