Brake upgrade.

Trying to improve on the standard crummy brakes that are on my 03 Silveradowith the 5.3. Nothing wrong mechanically, just they have been garbage from the day it was new. Brake pedal spongieness has got to go.

Been told that I can upgrade to a newer model Vacumm system and DON'T really want to go with the Hydralic set up at this time.

The local recycler is asking me a few questions I can't answer.

Off an 05 Silverado he is asking me the RPO codes.

Vaccum JC4, JF3, or JF7.

Anyone know which one is the better of the bunch???

Which 1 would be a direct fit replacement???

You can put 05 front brakes on. All you need is the calipers, pads and rotors. Your existing lines will work, and the calipers bolt right up to the spindles.

hydroboost is the way to go. Anything else is a waste of time unless you plan to hydroboost later.

there is a thread...that i started...in the performance mods section. may want to take a look at it.

Stainless braided brake lines are a good addition to. If you want larger rotors Quik has some in the for sale section at a good price. OR did the last time I looked.

Hydraboost is what I want to do, however cost and primarily time is what I have to deal with.

Guess no one really knows the difference with the RPO codes I posted earlier?

Id love to do hydroboost but couldnt afford it at the time, might sometime soon but i did steel braided lines and it got rid of the spongyness quite a bit, im glad i did it.

The RPO codes probably have to do with the electric pump some trucks/SUVs have on the vac booster. Our 2003 Tahoe has it and I have seen it on several others. Just a small electric vac pump that fits inline with the vac hose. I have never heard the thing run, don't know if it really even does anything.
Also in 2005 there were some trucks with rear disc (SS, Hybrid, etc.) while most had the rear drums. Could have something to do with that too.
Changing from a 03 to a 05 vac booster isn't going to help anything, unless you have a bad booster to start with.

and if you really feel up to some work, you could switch over to the dual-piston SUV rear disk brakes
