Ok so after doing a little research it looks like the problem is the reverse band or it could be a pin that punctures through the servo on the weaker 97+ design. I hear that this is do to puting the truck in drive when it is rolling in reverse. To get to the band, you have to remove everything in front of it. I do not know how to get to the servo? IIRC when i put a shift kit in my other 80e I think I remember putting different spirings in the servo. I'm not sure if this is the same servo or if there is just one servo.

if the servo went out or broke you can get to it without tearing much of anything apart since they're right on the bottom of the tranmission case. $150 is a bargain even for just a core. you can replace the output yoke with a slip style very easily. The 80e's come apart easily and then you can swap the output shaft.
Good to know Greg. Is that the servo that is located on the left side behind the valve body? I guess if that is the lowband/reverse servo than that is probably it lol. IIRC i think the transgo kit I just put in replaced that servo or maybe it was just springs. I think if the trans is belly up, the servo should be towards the tailshaft on the passenger side, correct??
I just picked it up anyway. I figured, as you said yourself, the core is worth that alone. But now I feel a little better about the purchase. This trans is probably gonna go in the rafters till I get money to built it. I just didn't wanna let that deal go buy. I still have to save money for my verter dammit.
BTW my transgo is installed except for the stiffer clutch springs behind the pump. (I havent removed my 60e yet because my bastard brother took my garage space because we live in a HOA and people were complaining about his El Camino sitting on jackstands so the build has ceased because I litterally have no room to continue my trans. Anyway, his driveshaft should finally be here this Fri.).
I used a 1.5" or 1.75" split collar shaft and 2 c-clamps to remove it. However it felt like the pump was binding on something so I stopped the process. Is this something I should worry about or can I just pull it all the way out?
Also what's the deal with the dial indicator I'm seeing guys use? Is that necessary if I'm not installing new clutch packs?
Again I am transmission illiterate.

Get an ATSG manual and study up, the book is worth a fortune in knowledge and they explain why you need the indicators and what procedures you should use to remove items. Some companies have dvd's showing how to rebuild 80e transmissions.
Ok i've been looking into the manuals and they are cheap nuff, about $30. As for the cd's, I haven't found anything under $200. Anybodt have a link?
If you can't find an 80e video, the TH400 video is a good one just for reference since a lot of the parts are used in the 80e from the TH400.

I've got a 4L80e core at home I'm gonna rebuild when I get back there and get some spare time. Seem like they are a little simpler than the 4L60e and I've done those with no problem. Thanks for the info and links.
