4l60E acumulator and Check ball question????

ok well i got sick of this SO CALLED shift kit this shop said they did so i tore apart the valve body and i have a few questions-

1)is there soppose to be a spring in the housing of the 1-2 accumulator?
2)is there soppose to be a different size check ball in the valve body? only one is bigger and its yellow?

this truck slammed to hard from 1-2 that my dash rattled loose! The builder wont tell me what he did.
when i removed the housing for the accumulator and removed the piston there was no spring in the housing ,

its funny ,but these auto trans are actually quiet easy to work on. i dont wanna do it again though lol

1.Yes there should be at least one spring in the 1-2 accumulator housing. On most factory units there will be two and in some TG kits you will actually have a spring above and below the acc piston. In your case you say there was not a spring at all. Was the piston travel blocked or was it just allowed full range of motion?

2.the larger check ball was probably used because your original separator plate had a factory ball beat itself through it. The hole was larger because of this and what some shops will do is install a larger torlon ball to correct this issue. IMO just install a new plate with 1/4" torlon balls and be done with it.

The obvious issue here is the 1-2 shift.

1. I would look to make sure that the 1-2 feed hole is drilled .082-.093.

2. Check the 1-2 accumulator valve and sleeve and make sure it is not installed upside down. This will also produce a harsh 3-4 shift.

3. Return the 1-2 accumulator to the factory setup.

4. if your trans has a billet 2nd gear servo from superior install a vet servo.

5. Look to see what the transmission line pressure is set at. Minimum should be 75-90psi. Max 210-230 psi.

6. If you have a tune that the transmission line pressure has been altered set it back to the factory settings. If the shift kit has a pressure regulator spring to increase line pressure and also a tune was done this is an issue.

the 1-2 acumulator spring is completly removed, only thing in the housing is the pin and a steel accumulator piston.
the 3-4 acumlator also has no spring at all only pin an a plastic accumulator piston but shifts fine in 3-4?is this correct?
i will be seeing if infact they installed a corvette servo or not in the morning.i have not removed it yet.
I will be looking into getting a transgo HD2 kit in the morning and start over fresh.Would this be a good application kit for daily driving? i do not want "harsh"1-2 shifts but a fast shift. also ive heard the vette servo and Tg hd2 kit together will cause a harsh 1-2 is this true? thanks again for all the help!

ok got one question, the check ball in the 1-2 valve body hole is the one thats bigger,almost twice the size of the others, i put a new transgo seperator plate and gaskets on it and reused all the check balls . it is reving to high from 1-2 and i have to let off the throttle to shift 1-2 and if i apply a little more throttle it will jump back into first gear. could this check ball being bigger maybe blocking the oil pressure from building in the valve body? everything else is working just fine and as it should and no engine lights. im going to get new check balls tomorrow and was wondering what size or a brand i need or any others that are better?

I would not think that a larger check ball is going to cause the issue you are having with the 1-2 shift. It sounds more like there is an issue with a leak or a slipping band. Check your 1-2 accumulator piston seals and also the 2nd band servo seals. I see these as being most common or the obvious a damaged band. If all is well there than I would suspect an issue in the valve body. Vince

Thanks, im still going to get new check balls tomorrow and a few orings for the solinoids , well i just noticed metal flake in my oil pan, almost like a candy paint job on a car. when i assembled it yesterday the fluid was clean, i drove it for maybe 10-15 miles and just dropped the valve body today ,i also noticed i cannot see the 2-4 band anchor in the transmission anymore? almost as if its missing ,does the anchor move with the band? maybe my servo clearence is to tight?hopefully it didnt damage the band to bad?

When you say anchor are you talking about the pin? This might have fell out of the case while you had things apart.

yes the pin, im wondering if it might be in my oil bucket ? maybe it fell out when i removed it this time. ill have to look in it and if its not there then ill be worried, that pin should not just fall out should it?

ok i installed new checkballs , Transgo hd2, Transgo seperator plate, all aluminum pistons, corvette servo,new solinoids, and it works like a charm , im very happy with the HD2 kit, was easy to install also,
im looking into upgrading my 4th apply piston here soon as well since i do tow with my truck. Thanks for all the great information and help
