How hard is it to install a new power steering rack on a 2004 silverado 4.8 2WD?
Not hard at all. It is just held in with 2 bolts, disconnect rod ends, hoses and steering shaft and you are golden. Oh and I think there is a ground strap on it too.
Sounds easy enough. Thanks!
Are the tie rod ends fairly easy to get off? I'm sure there is a tool I can borrow from the auto parts store. Also, I have 93K on the truck and was thinking I might as well put new tie rod ends on the new rack. Opinions?
remove the cotter pin and nut and politely smack the hell out of the ear the tie rod bolts through usually they jump out DO NOT HIT ON THE THREADS you will bind it up and be fixing more then the rack. . . .otherwise the other guy is pretty on although i dont believe your year model has the ground strap...
...oh and BTW im sure some people wont like that idea and they probably make some $300 tool that takes it out but to everyone their own :)
If your going to the parts store anyways, I would just borrow the tool and make your life easier.
How do I remove the steering shaft from the rack?
Be sure to use thread lock when reassembling the inner tie rods. Also I just used a 8" pipe wrench to break and make.
Inner tie rod ends? Aren't they a part of the new rack and pinion assembly? I'm buying the complete streering rack. All I should have to do is new outer tie rod ends, connect the fluid lines and bolt to the frame. Right?
Here is what I'm buying. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2873&ppt=C0031
Yeah looks like thats all you gotta do.
