alignment tool?
never used that before...
You don't know about it, but it is really sweet. I have one, and one of the tools looks like batman. It's a kit that helps to align all the covers and gaskets so that they are dead nuts.
my book says to just use two feeler gauges, .002 inches thick
LOL at a flat plate to bolt to the bottom of the cover and bottom of block. Just make sure when you bolt the front and rear covers on the are flat with the bottom of the block. Easy enough
well your right on with just using the feeler guages but I am mainly interested in the rear cover seal installation tool that comes with the kit, Its supposed to keep the lips on the seal from folding under while you install it. I just dont want to screw it up this is my first LS Build.
What about the newer style rear cover seal I heard its supposed to be a better design that you dont have to use the tool to install???
I have a spare trans bell housing and I put it on, bolt the oil pan down with a couple bolt, remove bell housing, loosely install front cover with seal installed, install balancer, snug up bottom bolts going through oil pan, tighten front cover bolts, remove bottom two bolts going through pan, install rear seal in rear cover, make sure dogbone oil diverter is installed in back of block, install rear cover with gasket, snug long bolts going through bottom of pan, tighten all bolts on rear cover, remove pan, install bell housing and snug up the two lower bolts going into the pan through the bell housing, tighten all pan bolts to spec, remove bell housing. Phew!
