Besides the heads... What do I need to put the 243 heads on my 2001 2500HD with the 6.0l? and... Is it worth it? Will I still keep my low end torque? I'm really just interested in better fuel economy. Thanks

If you are just after fuel economy I wouldn't bother. The small gain you might get will take an awful long time to pay for the swap and then you probably will step up to higher octane fuel and there goes the savings.
243's are pretty good..
are you looking to ssave on gas? or performance?
Trying to save gas. My head gaskets getting ready to go soon, and i can get some 243 heads (with about 11,000 miles on them) for the same price that the machine shop wants to clean-up my heads now.
How do you know that your head gasket is about to go? Is there some trick or indication?
What did 243's come on?
not from my own personal experience. but from what i hear from others the some major signs are
white residue on the oil fill cap
weird heater, mine blows cold on the passenger floorboard
and I burned 3 quarts of oil in 1,500 miles.
So I'm guessing its just a matter of time
243's came on Z06's. Find some 799's. Same castings, just not the higher rate springs, and no sodium filled valves. They came on L33 HO 5.3's.
243s came on c5 z06's which are the LS6 heads [longer valves and ligther]
243s came on LS2 and LS4 motors [these motors had the yellow springs but standard valves]
243s came on 5.3 HO
243s came on GenIV 5.3 and 4.8
^^^^^^^^^these heads had standard valves and springs as well
