big cam
ok so we've all heard that the biggest we should go in a 5.3 rcsb truck is like 228 or so. My question is has anybody tried anything considered big? like 230-238 in duration? i have a a rcsb 5.3 and i plan on doing heads and cam and im just trying to figure out why i shouldnt go bigger than a 228. i have a good bit of weight reduction and im guessing the truck is around 3800 or so. so come on truck gurus, lets discuss this.

I am witness to an ECSB truck with a 3400 stall running a 234/236 .595/.598 112 LSA cam. And it runs WELL. And that is on a stock truck intake and stock 706 heads.
A 5.3L can handle a decent cam, but the supporting mods have to match with it. I would not go over a those duration numbers I listed above and I also would not go over .60X lift. The stock heads run a 61.15 CC size, so any head milling would have to be minimal if a .60X lift cam is gunna be run..cause you don't wanna experience PTV issues.

Thts what me and my buddy were thinking too. I was telling him I'm thinking about a 224 in the truck and he said he would go bigger. Of course he would bc he has a Trex in his car lol. So I figured I would ask some trucks guys

I always say go bigger cause people tend to go too small. But cam specs for a car are different than cam specs for a truck.
-
Yea that's why I wanted to run it by some truck guys. Well I think imma look for something in the low 230s maybe mid 230s lol. And should I get the Texas speed 5.3 heads, Texas speed ls6 heads, or get my stock 862s potted and polished locally?
-
u need a 3600 stall with any of those cams trust me
-
Yea that's what I planned on getting
-
Well, if there is a good, well known PnP guy, have them done locally. If not--they TSP Stage 2.5 heads are a good buy cause they flow nice...because of the bigger valves. Remember--the head job revolved around the size of valve and the valve job.
But also remember about PTV. Decked 862s with larger valves will not like a .6XX lift cam.

with the smaller motors you should run a much higher stall and much steeper gears to compensate.
so if you want to run say the Trex in the 5.3 or even Ms4 or pollluter then think of running a 4400 stall, 456 gears, 26" tall tire. as long as it clears it will run fairly well and as for drivablity its all in the TUNE. it will have the topend for sure just lack alot of low end thats why converter and gear is there

I will prolly get the tsp 5.3 and cam package then. And george, I don't plan on going trex or ms4 big lol. But I don't have a problem running a 4k stall or 410s. Being as I have 27" tall street tires I'd like to keep it under 4.30s.
