new problem with 4wd
First it was the encoder and now after driving a while the dash switch stops working and I get a service 4wd light. Sometimes it just won't shift out of 2wd and other times all the lights go out with no shifting. Is my dash switch the culprit?

Probably, those seem to go out quite often. What is the code?

C0327 is the sensor in the encoder. Hope you didn't replace the whole thing as it's like $700 and the sensor might be $100. If you swapped for a used encoder then you likely got another bad one as it is very common 2003+. There are like 2-3 bulletins for this but I'll tell ya that the sensor fixes 99% of them. You need to also check the ground a the base of the LH a-pillar and the ground on the frame behind the LF wheel near the body mount. There are other checks but usually the sensor is at fault.
Watch out for aftermarket nerf bars and relocated grounds.

Nah that encoder was free. I'll just swap it out after my hunting trip this weekend. Is it pretty easy?

Much easier to do when transfer case is in neutral to start. See dot comment below plus it's a lot easier to get it lined up and reinstalled in N.
Take of the skid plate and the front driveshaft. Unplug it and remove 3 15mm bolts. Pull it off then lay it on the bench. Two 20 torx and two 15 torx screws, lift motor cover, unplug sensor, and remove, make sure dot on gear lines up with dot on case, resassemble. Don't lose the thrust washers and stuff. There's a tab on the bottom of the sensor that lines up with a divot in the case as well as a keyway in the shaft and the center of the sensor.
