Running Vista or XP?
I don't have experience with Vista (the very little I've played with it I hated it), but with XP you can do a Repair of your OS with your XP disc (assuming your comp came with the full XP disc and not simply a "restore" disc).
To do a Repair with XP, insert your XP disc during bootup and proceed almost as if you're going to do a wipe and reinstall. Do NOT try the Recovery Console unless you're really proficient.....that's far beyond me. The Repair feature is after the Recovery Console option pops up, so pass by the Recovery Console.
I actually just did a Repair on my comp about 2 weeks ago, due to me playing with software that I shouldn't have LOL (but that's the best way for me to learn.....break it, and then fix it). You'll have to re-update Windows after using Repair, and be prepared for it to take awhile.
I'm waiting for Windows 7 to come out in late October, unless it gets pushed back, and then I'm gonna build myself a new computer. I've never built one myself, about time I did.......and the benefit of getting a better comp than a pre-built one for the budget I have in mind is too good to pass up this time. TigerDirect has some great (desktop) Barebones systems that you can build, then add your own OS and graphics cards and game away.
I also highly recommend running the Firefox web browser rather than Internet Explorer. I use a ton of addons with Firefox, but the two that will make it nearly bulletproof (compared to IE) are AdBlockPlus, and NoScript. Get those 2 addons and surf to your heart's content with almost no worry.
I dont have the disk for windows. I got the laptop used. I set it back a month last time and it erased all the crap. Now I cant figure out how I did it. Has something to do with system restore.
I have windows xp. but no disc dang my luck.
Unfortunately, you have a virus and likely have to format and start over again. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that's all there that can be done. Unless you can get and anti-virus program installed, and the AV is able to pick up the virus.
btw. You could also try a Trojan remover, and see if that works.
have you tried any free anti virus programs?
is it a dell? lol i have a few cd's to fix that..
:sux2bu:  J/K
I'm not sure I have a virus. Last time a bunch of pop ups trying to get me to buy trojan spy ware remover and crap popped up. this time the same thing.
Last time I went to system restore and set it back a month. Wiped it away.
Now when I go to system restore theres a calender on the left side and it wont let me go set it back in time. I'm probably doing something wrong.
Not being able to run a system restore is caused by a virus. And the other stuff is likely a trojan.
Try installing this. AVG Free - Download Free Antivirus and Antispyware for Windows 7, Vista and XP. If it doesn't work, then you're probably going to have to find an XP disc, and wipe the computer.
AVG is good stuff. I have it on my laptop and it works awesome.
When I was back in college, I had a computer that had Windows ME. It was freakin horrible. I bought a full licensed copy of XP from school and it cost like $6. See if you know someone at a college and see if they will buy you one.
