I have an '01 Sierra 4.8. I was looking around tbyrnemotorsports.com and they have alot of stuff for my engine.
SLP makes a cam and so does Lunati, what else should I buy to complement the cam?
I see SLP Rocker Arm Package for $419.99, thats just rockers...
The next package down is SLP Rocker Arm Package, LS1/LS6 w/LS6 Springs, Keepers for $569.99
And the other one is SLP Rocker Arm Package, LS1/LS6 w/SLP Springs, Titanium Retainers, Keepers for $789.99
And below that I see more stuff...
Then there's Lunati...
Which is "better?"...can someone help me out?
I will need my computer to be reprogrammed...what should I get...the Diablo or LS1Edit?
What headers should I get? I Like the TOG mid-length, but they cost about the same as ASM long-tube...are the long tubes smog legal?
Sorry for all the questions, but thanks for any info...

Yes you will have to have the PCM reprogrammed if you are going to do it the right way. Im my opinion Comp Cams has the most experience with LS1 cams you should give them a look. The LS6 cam is popular and produces good results for most people. As for the rocker arms, you need to pay attention to the ratio vs your lift. If you get a high lift cam stay away from anything greater than 1:6.
Long tubes are harder to get passed emissions unless they are coated. This will help keep the cats lit and helps scavenging.
Selecting a cam is like a sience. You need to account for things like gear rations, stall speeds, etc. Bigger is not necessarily better. I have a post somewhere on this board where I explain a little bit about cam specs. Give it a read. I will try to search for it and post the link here.
Good luck!

You probably know what i'm already thinking, i know, i always bring up the ls1. but...
If you go with a mild cam, you're probably going to have to install retainers, springs and maybe harder pushrods. That's about 700$ from ls1motorsports.
Your headers are say 600-700$ right?
That's already $1400 bucks. That's if you install it.
How much HP did you find out that will give you? I'm guessing 25-35 from the cam, and 15 from the headers. Have you thought about buying an ls1 longblock for less than $1500 easy?
Just trying to explore all the possiblities. You'll start off with more HP and have a better baseline for modding that badboy.
If you want to wake that 4.8 up a little bit, get the roller rockers, and some 4.10 gears, they are fun and awesome for light to light, and they still give you low rpms on the highway.
I'm not trying to bust any bubbles, just trying to help, those 4.8 and 5.3's are badass too, all the gen III engines are badass.
let us know what you decide,
btw, you know i'm an ls1 whore, so don't be offended, hahahaha, i always respond with that answer,
have fun,
allen

I have done a lot of research to see what I could do to wake my little 4.8 up, and found it would be cheaper and benneficial especialy with keeping good gas mileage. Again this is just my opinion. I like the 4.8, its a great enginge for the trucks, just not the best performance engine. Just keep us informed on what you decide.

Thanks for the responses guys,
I'm still doing research on this stuff, and I don't know what all I want to do.
Farmtruc: An LS1 longblock? you mean a new motor?
As you can tell, I'm new at all this stuff... :duh:
I wasn't really looking at swapping my engine, I wanna just wake it up a little.
I thought I read somewhere to not exceed .500 lift on my engine...anyone know if theres any truth to that?
The mild Lunati one is .510 in and .300 out
here are the specs
HYDRAULIC ROLLER: Good Idle. Excellent low-end and mid-range torque horsepower. PART# 55002LUN
1800-4800

279°
212°

.300"
.300"
116° Sep
112° Int C/L
-06°BTC 38°ABC /
50.5°BBC -9.5°ATC
Thats what I want (I think), a nice take off cam...I wanna be fast off the line...
I found this Crane Cam...I guess that would work for me too...
208/216 .500/.200 114LSA
Excellent low-end power. Mild cam for automatics with mild or stock convertor. Crane 1.8 roller rockers recommended.
Power Band: 1500-5500 RPM's
Part #: 40-1044HR00007
Or should I go with the Comp Cam that Hay Hauler said he can get good prices on, I looked at that spec sheet he posted on the link wm_sorg gave me...and that one is the second one from the bottom of the link Comp Cam Page
.522/.529 LSA 114
wg_sorg said my stock cam spec is
"2001-2002: 198/197 .478/.478 115 LSA"
Is going from .478 to .500 alot?
I like accelerating fast :taunt: I dont like to speed....if that makes sense
If I went with any of those 3 cams, what else would you recommend to go with it? Im asking about rocker arms, pushrods, valve springs, retainter, keepers and stuff like that...
Mind you, Everything else is stock...if I get cams and that other stuff, Ill definetly get headers and LS1Edit...
And I'm gettin a Transgo shift kit with billet servos, 4.56 gears and an Eaton Posi to help get the power to the ground....
Phew, sorry for writing a paragraph...If you have any answers to any of my million questions thanks alot.
Suggestions from you guys is wanted...that why I ask
-
Ya, i mean a whole new/used longblock, the results are awesome. You did say you like taking off fast and not speeding, so the 4.8L should be just fine. 4.56 gears!!!!!!!!! !!! holy cow, lol, that will def. get you some take off, plus the posi, seee yyaaaaaa!!!
If you go over .500 or somewhere around there, you'll have to upgrade to new springs. Is that what you were asking?
As far as the cam, get something that is going to suite your driving habits, if you like to take off fast and race light to light, get a cam that is in that rpm range, something that starts around 1500rpms.
Headers are a good addition to any cam.
For more info, or a collection of cams that domeskilla put together, check here: http://www.ls1truck.com/reference/camspecs.html
Those 4.56 gears are going to pretty steep, my 4.10's are great, but i don't see ever going lower than that. What size tire do you have, the circumference? That will make a difference too.
Sounds like you're on the right track then, if you want some spunkyness to that 4.8L, a cam/headers/4.56/posi are the way to go. Maybe a underdrive pulley, and if you don't already have them, LS1 fans.
good luck,
allen

Thanks for the responses guys, but unfortunately the cams will have to wait a bit. Hopefully I'll get them by the end of this summer.
I just bought gears, an Eaton posi, and the install kit for $600 shipped. That will go in next week provided it gets here on time. After that, I think I'm going to get a TransGo and cooler. I know I'll need to get a programmer to get rid of TM since I heard that it's more apparant with the TransGo installed. THEN, I will get cams and headers.
Btw, I decided to go with the 4.10 per the suggestions of different members on different forums.
Hmm, I'll check the diameter of my tires tomorrow and get back to you on that. I definately want e-fans too. Sheesh, all these toys to buy and not enough money :frown:
-
Good choice, that's really gonna wake that badboy up, badass,
hey, don't forget, if you're not going to get ls1edit, i can remove that TM for you cheaper than anyone else can, and the results are awesome,
good luck and let me know how it goes,
allen

Cool,
I guess I'll have to get a spare PCM so if I decide to send you mine for some tuning, I'll still be able to drive my baby
How much is it for another PCM?
Thanks...
