TBI to edelbrock MPFI, is it worth it?

I have a problem. I need a new truck. I want a regular cab short bed 1500. The only problem is I can decide on wheather I want a 5.3, and just do basic mods from there. My other choice is a TBI 350 powered chevy. I was leaning towards the 5.3 BUT then I found out about that MPFI kit and the smog legal power package that edelbrock makes so the people in california dont feel forgotten. I was wondering if anyone has any opinions on that. I just want to get into the 14's with a daily driver, that wont be like a big block on gas, and pass smog with the mods. I think that is a good package. Edelbrock usually has good mpg and drivability to their power packages. Pace Parts is also selling a L31 long block with this MPFI installed for 3k something... That would be a good daily driver with a solid tq curve as well.

Hey bro, I've been doing some research and that's a good package but it's all in how much money you want to spend as to how far yuo can go. Edelbrock, Holley, the GM Ram Jet and there are a couple of more after market fuel systems out there that will do what you want and they average $2000.00 to $3000.00 in cost. What you might want to consider like I am, is it worth the cost when you can pick up a used LS1 with tranny for $3000.00 to $4000.00 with wiring and ECM complete. This way you'll get power and fuel economy. If you decide to go with the L31, you can use the Fastburn heads and the Edelbrock system together. If you really want to go unique, get the Ram Jet fuel system, change out the the fuel injectors to some higher flowing one's and out you a decent cam in and you'll be in the 13's easy. You'll have to get the ECM and wiring harness seperate.

This retro-fit fuel injection kit is released for use on small-block V8 engine using vortec design cylinder heads. The vortec heads are P/N 12558060 iron or 12464298 aluminum. This fuel injection unit must use an after market ECM and wiring harness with the proper calibration. This unit is used on 350 Ram Jet engine P/N 12495515.

Thanks for the info guys I didnt think that ls1 swap was that cheap. Not that I'm a millionare...ha ha...I just thought that it would cost an arm and a leg to do that swap. I just have one problem.....that ram jet kit...I looked at it and it talks about an after market wiring set-up.....to me...if the kit isnt COMPLETE for its purpose..then its not CARB legal....from what I understand anyways....I could be wrong BUT that kit on didnt say anything about having a CARB exemption number, and USUALLY the kits that are CARB legal have the number at the bottom of the description for quick reference. I dont mean to shoot down your ideas or anything but that edelbrock kit IS CARB legal and is a COMPLETE kit, and they also sell REPLACEMENT parts for when stuff starts taking a crap on you over time.....or the UPS guy does some ACE VENTURA action with your box on the way to your house. I DID think that the edelbrock kit was the way to go because its all from one company...the parts have been put together before with no problems, or not much tuning costs (if any, they burn your own chip and the price is included in the kit)....does that make ANY sense...or am I just crazy here? HA HA :duh:

OH YEAH....do they still make regular cab short bed 5.3's that are 2wd? I looked on GM's website and it only shows the 4.8 as the big motor for the RCSB.

You're correct, It's not CARB legal. I was just throwing that out as an option because it looks cool. :)
