I'm new to this site and I'd appreciate any pointers I can get. I have a 2wd 06 silverado with a 4.8 under the hood. I'm about to replace my stock 4L60 with a Finish Line Transmissions 4L60 but I've never replaced a tranny before. The last time I had the truck on a lift it looked like the crossmember and y-pipe were the biggest obstacles. Is it at all difficult and if so, how bad? And does anyone know how to turn OFF the traction control?
swaps aren't too bad. Disconnect battery, remove starter, remove 3 torque converter bolts and push converter away from the flywheel, remove heat shield on the passenger side if it has one, remove driveshaft, disconnect shift linkage and transmission wiring harness (two connectors, one large round and one small two wire on the tailshaft housing for the speedometer), remove two cooler lines using a right angle dental pick to get the small circlip out of the connector, unbolt the bell housings bolts, pull the dipstick loose from the transmission, remove crossmember and it falls out on the ground.
Did you get a new converter or are you reusing the old one?
Measure how far the old converter is setting from the end of the bellhousing. Use that to confirm the installation of the converter in the new transmission. Reverse removal instructions for reinstallation.
Save yourself lots of messy cleanup by buying a large storage tote and put it under the transmission and drop the pan before removing the original unit. It will catch 99% of the fluid that way. Its also a good time to put a drain plug in the new transmission, while its out sitting on the ground.

If your old trans had a failure, or the fluid looks bad you should flush out the cooling lines as well. Install at least one quart of fluid into the converter before you install it on the transmission.
Hey thanks a lot everyone, this is some very helpful info. And to answer RHB's converter question, yes I will be getting a new torque converter. Still trying to figure out that pesky traction control though....
