is it better to hold the brake an throttle at the same time then let off the brake, or just punch the gas?

It totally depends on your setup, track conditions, etc.
ive got completely stock driveline and almost never go to he track, its got AWD so spinning the tires isnt a problem (yet) i just wana make sure im not doing this completely wrong a loosing a lot of time
You would probably do best two-footing it and revving to about 2000 rpm's. Release when you see the last yellow light come on. Given reaction time and the time it actually takes the vehicle to get moving, that should give you a pretty good start.
Every vehicle is different, so start there, and make adjustments and see how you do.
Biggest thing is have fun with it and don't take it too seriously. And don't sweat the other guy...
2k rpms? Wow. I would love to see a stock truck get up that high from a brake stall...
Since you have AWD, I would stall it as high as it will go without moving you forward at the timing lights..
thanks for all the help guys! ya, 2000 is about all it will get.
Experiment when ya get there - some guys get better times by not stalling as high...just depends on the vehicle.
