ok...it is a freeze plug...oriellys or autozone will have them....
ok what benefits will i get by removing the egr system, besides having the big pipe that goes across my whole inside of my intake manifold removed.
some said it allows for more timing along with more adjustability in the tune....is this true?
i guess my real question is....is it worth it to remove the egr system?

Yes, you can easily get a freeze plug to block off the intake. I just cut the plate off the EGR hose leading into the intake, cut a piece of 1/16" thick rubber and used silicone to adhere it to the plate. Then I screwed it back on and let the silicone set. You can make an EGR plate for the headers by going up to VatoZone or O'Reillys and buying a generic block off plate for an oil pump or something. Make sure to draw a template and bring it up to match the size and bolt hole locations.
The EGR is an Exhaust Gas Recirculation System designed to intake the unspent exhaust gasses...its an emissions thing really... It does allow for better tuning and performance.

EGR is nonfunctional during wide open throttle, what could you possibly gain by removing it?
Tune with egr vs tune without egr, Id have to see hard data to prove that the latter would make a dramatic difference.
Removal of smog pump, might, just might on a good day give you 1-2 hp. :D
The logic that your engine will detonate with the smog pump removed is kinda goofy IMO, its followed by the logic that the recirculated exhaust aka inert gas, somehow cools the combustion chamber, keep in mind, this recirculated gas not half a second ago left the combustion chamber...if you block the egr valve and forcethe engine to intake fresh air...this would be cooler, your engines computer during cruise adjusts for a target air/fuel ratio, its not logical that this simple deletion of the egr will throw the computer out of limits.
Will you loss mpg, not likely noticably if at all.
Will you spend some time adding radioshack tricks to certain sensors to keep the CEL light off and the computer happy, you bet.
Only rationale I have for egr removal is a cleaner engine bay, thats also subjective and may not be on most peoples priority list. :D Factor in the fact, there is little logic to modifying and engine to begin with, all bets are off. :D
Only real advice I have, sleep on it, wait a month, see if you still care, if not, then you saved yourself time and wasted energy, if yes, sleep on it another month. :D
