Hey guys,
I got my ls1 engine w/ 243 heads all built now, Im putting some ARP rod bolts on today and i wanted to do a cylinder compression check. I went out and bought a compression gauge from NAPA all ready too.
I was wondering what type of PSI numbers am i looking for? Also is there a correct way to check cylinder compression? or do i just crank the engine over a few time by hand? Thanks for the help!
Equal numbers!! Maybe 130 -150, +- 15 psi. And i don't think doing it by hand is going to spin it fast enough. Got a starter? After 4 or 5 spins it will have reached it's max.
When I did mine, I pulled out the fuel pump relay, pulled out all of the spark plugs and put the compression tester on one cylinder. I put the gas pedal to the floor to allow the throttle body to open all the way, then cranked the engine with the key for 4-5 revolutions. With only one cylinder building compression, you can easily count the number of revolutions. Record data, move to next cylinder, repeat.

Cool thanks for the information i know im looking for even numbers but i just wanted to know excatly.. ive head 170-180 and now 130-150psi.
I have the motor outside the truck right now, and yes i do have a starter. Is there a way i can test it before i drop it in the truck. I dont want to have to pulled it out because i have bad compression. Thanks people

Yeah--bolt up the flexplate to the truck and then bolt up the starter. Get some heavy duty gauge wiring and connect the proper wires to the starter and proper ground. Prop open the TB with something to keep it at WOT. Brace the motor on either side sufficiently so that once you try to crank it that it doesn't flop all over. Make sure you have oil in it--don't wanna try and crank a dry motor... Then, once the plugs are removed, touch the power wire to the battery and have the starter kick the motor over a few times as described above.
