gear break-in

So exotic kustoms replaced my ring and pinion for free. They said they would do the gear break in routine, but should I go ahead and do it as well once I pick up the truck tomorrow? Which is like; drive 15-20min easy accleration.. Stop, let cool down.. Repeat..

Only thing that sucks is like its an 45-hour back to my house.. So that might take a while. Should I replace the gear oil after the first 500 miles as well? The yukon gear instructions say too... but they are referring to vehicles that tow..

I would say drive the trip easy, let it cool and your good to go. It depends on the fluid your running, if your just running just a mineral base with the friction modifier I would change it after a few hundred miles. If you have a good synthetic, leave it. I run royal purple, 75-90, just my .02

I thought you werent supposed to run syn in the rearend? Or is that with certain diffs?

Certain diffs call for certain fluids. I would go with what the manufacturer recommends. But yeah, you must do the proper heat cycles with the rearend so that you set it correctly. And if it says to change the fluid, do it. Personally, I would. Gear oil isn't that expensive...

The only thing I'm worried about is putting the cover backon. I usually have bad luck and it wont seal, and itll start leaking

I just use black rtv, I dont even use a gasket. Just clean both surfaces, small bead of rtv aroun all the holes and between, torque it down, let it sit for an hour or so, fill and go. done it a bunch and havent had any issues. again my .02

When I install gears here at my Shop.. We drive around 20 miles non stop then let it sit 8-10 hours before we move the truck again... Most of the times we install gears 4.56+ in Dodges,F250s with 38"+ tires so i would say its a little extreme ... Once its ready to drive.. I ask the customer to drive reasonable/normal a few hundred miles and it says 500 before towing .. I run Amsoil in my Rear Axle.. YOU CANNOT use black RTV with Amsoil you must use Ultra Grey

it's the heat cycles that you are putting your rear thru...short heat cycles for a week or less and you are ready to go
