Hi All,
What would be the max boost a 2001 stock 5.3 could handle with proper tuning?
I have a Whipple and their engineer states that anything over 6 psi will blow it up.
I am complete custom tuned and now spraying metahnol/water and want more boost.
I believe The_Mexican got 9.5lbs from his 03 5.3L. He added a 2.9" pulley and then we tuned it.

Actually is running 10 psi now (after some time Allen's tune got better :thumb: ) :jump: :smile:
Engine has no problems so far, I say go for the 2.9 pulley, you won't regret it.
I was told the same thing by whipple that 10psi will not work but they also told me that if I wanted to run an alcohoo injection system that it would make up for the prblem of detonnation and I Would not need a tune. They then told me that if I did the 10psi the alcohol injection AND a tuen it would run even better. SMC enterprises has a nice setup http://www.smcenterprises.com/injector_kit.htm.
Whipple guys are morons (not you, the designers/people on the phone.) You gotta remember that's a NON intercooled setup so you can't go crazy with boost on 93 oct gas. You could push a stock motor to 10psi no problem if you have the gas or are intercooled.
I'd ditch that crap Whipple Aux computer for some Racetronix 42lbs/hr injectors and tune it that way. I think you'd be highly suprised how much better it'd run that way alone.
Then get a good set of full length headers and a nice stall converter and be done with it.

Seriously though, you're gonna need tuning for 10psi, I don't care what anyone says, there's just too much timing for that kind of boost. I had to scale that 5.3L down some just so it wouldn't ping. More boost than timing will give you more power, so there's nothing wrong with scaling the timing table down. Detonation and Boost don't like each other.
As for the alcohol kit, that is just a patch, get it tuned right then add the alcohol just to be safe and then it will benefit you and keep your engine running right.

Now have eaton posi with carbon clutches 4:10 ratio and custom built 4l60e 2800 stall.
I am running a metanol/water injection as a safety measure and ready to boost it up some more!
Waiting on a wide band 02 set up to monitor the progress with the tune and injection. Last tune i was at 11.8-1 AFR without the injection and 421 RWHP. :thumb:
Sounds like you're right on target then.
Nothing wrong with running on the rich side with a boosted truck, that a/f sounds just right.

What do you think on the injectors from stock to higher flow as Hit Man suggest? Or should i just up the whipple aux injectors alone? (Scared I will flood the air mix)
I have heard of some guys removing the aux injectors completely and running like 52 lb to replace the stock.But will the oe fuel pump keep up either way?
Any thoughts

If it were my truck, I'd dump the aux injectors and put in some 8.1L marine 42lb'er's. They are enough for a cammed, Radix 6L, so I'm sure you'll be fine until you get crazy with it.Quote:

In my opinion, the added injectors are just a patch and I know it can be tuned just fine with some bigger injectors. The IFR for the 8.1L 42's will be a value of 5.20 in ls1edit.
For the pump, just get yourself an upgraded pump that goes in the tank along with a fp guage to keep tabs on things.
how much power are you shooting for?
