2002 5.3 going into a 1983 swb chevy.
Is the fuse box from the donor truck needed to do the swap?
Im not sure whether I will be doing all the wiring or getting a harness.
I have not researched all the wiring yet, I just got the motor and realized the fuse box was not included..

Your best bet is to get a custom harness from Nelsonperformance.com. Its plug and play. You will also need to get the vats removed which they can also do. While your at it you should get a hot tune for that thing. Well worth the moola!
The NelsonPerformance.com harness is the shiznit. It's clean and easy to install, no guesswork. Ebay the truck harness and go the simple route. Save the headaches for another day.
even if you scored the fuse block for the 2002 (28.95 on eBay i got one)
it wouldnt help as youd need 4 other connectors for tha block to sorta
finish the power up.
you can buy a schematic and spend 80hours fingering out what goes where
or buy an aftermarket swap harness and start you vehicle sooner.
did you also get the computer with the engine?
what transmission do you plan on running?

Alright... you heard a few recommendations already. Here's one more!
I went the cheap route due to budget constraints, and was not willing to wait to get the truck running. It didn't take me 80 hours to get the wiring sorted out, but it IS tedious. <--- I know airdeano was just throwing out a number, but the time Allen spends is probably right along with this.
Anyhow, I still am considering purchasing a harness from NP to clean up the install, but don't have to b/c I have every function that you'd get from a custom harness. It can be done, but it is tedious. I'd recommend getting the Nelson Performance harness if you're not looking to invest the time to do yourself. Based on what you have, NP will fabricate all you need for additional stuff like e-fans. BTW, NP can make it to plug in place of your existing OBS fuse block terminal (at least it was offered when I inquired for my 86 C10).
Call NP, and see for yourself... or PM farmtruc. He's always responded when I had questions regarding NP's offered products. Oh yea... may as well get the PCM flashed with NP's popular performance tune. Member testimonies show it's "off da chain". :cool:
The transmission will be a 4l60e.

To respond to the PCM question, I did get the PCM out of the truck.
I will more than likely have them reflash the PCM with their performance tune, I'm just not sure about the other options at this time.
I plan to do more research and come to a conclusion in the near future.
It is not all about spending the money on the harness, to me it is more about doing it myself and feeling like I have accomplished something. I guess that is the engineer in me.;)

Tedious is a good description. I plan on labeling wiring this weekend...
I'm in the middle of this also with my 65 Vette project. I've been using a contiuity tester to find pin locations of the plugs I don't have connected. Then I check the pin out descriptions from some threads I've found and that tells me what I have and if I can eliminate it.
I agree that the challenge and satisfaction of DIY means a lot to me. Anyone can just throw money at a project but not everyone can get into the meaty tasks and succeed. If you're just going to throw money , just buy one that is already done is how I feel.
Just for an example here is a link to what I did yesterday, I needed a P/S pump rear bracket and this is how I solved the problem.
