I am about to do a T-56 swap into my Suburban and I just need to know what everyone is doing for a crossmember. Chris Alston's Chassisworks sells tubular crossmembers in 2,4,6 and 8 inch drops for $97. I know that the t-56 needs a crossmember with a drop in it, but how much? I am thinking 4 inch, but I might be wrong. What are you using? Any help would be great. I picked up a clutch pedal and master cylinder today and I am going to fit it in tomorrow. Also what kind of clutches are you using? And do you ever tow? If you do, what is the max weight you have towed. I want a clutch that is pretty streetable, but durable and can handle the weight of the Suburban.
Thanks in advance
David.
PS. Also Summit sells a universal crossmember with a 3 inch drop found here Universal 3" Drop Transmission Mount

My truck is a little newer than what you was looking for but I would think that if you got a crossmember from a 5 speed truck from 88 to 98 it should work. My truck had a 5 speed and the 6 speed worked perfect with that crossmember. It is flat with no drop in it. I am using a spec II clutch and it works very smooth. Be prepared to go to at least a 4.10 gear with that trans because low gear is 2.66 and 6th is .50, and if you plan on pulling much think hard about 4.56's. I can run 85 @ 2000rpm's with 4.10's and a 29" tire in 6th gear.

So I guess Ron is the only person on this board with a 6 speed in his truck? WOW I thought more people had done this swap.

You might have better luck on the LS1 Tech forum with six speed swaps. www.ls1tech.com

mines a 98 and the tranny sits on the factory x-member.
as for a clutch, spec stage 2 at least, and like ron said...be prepared to re-gear.

Thanks for your responses guys. I found tons of usefull info over at ls1tech. I will be doing the swap within 2 weeks. Also I have decided to go with 4.56 gears. I want to be able to get off the line with out smoking the clutch. I got the pedal and master cylinder installed last night, came out great. Looks like it came from the factory like that. More updates to come.
