kind of found out today i am pretty much on my own installing this bad boy, and of course, as you gyus can probably tell reading any of my previous posts, i know jack s**t about this stuff. my mechanic cant get to it for a few weeks, and we, me and g/f, gave her back tuesday, end of lease, and therefore have one vehicle, my truck. june 9th, my new schedule at work goes into effect, 4p-2a, and i will HAVE to have a second vehicle. me be able to deal for about a week, but that will require getting rides from co-workers and such. anyway, the questions. and i have gone through the stickies on this site and ls1tech, so either i missed some of this, or like i said above, i am too confused/ignorant to know that i already read how to do it. :whack:

i have a ls1 from a 2000 ss, going into my 79 swb, keeping the th350. all i have is the long block.

i bought a used nelson harness, and it seems pretty straightforward. it has a 4 fuse block with it. the guy i bought it from labeled all the plugs and wires, except three. is this all i need. i planned on just keeping all the wiring inside the engine bay, to save time, until a later date.

1-there is a big gray plug woth a black cover on it, i believe to be the fuel pump relay, and it has a red wire exiting the plug that has been cut off and unlabeled.

2 & 3-coming out of the fuse block, there are 3 pink wires. these 3 wires go to a cluster of two blocks with slip on connectors. on the bottom or back side of these blocks, where this cluster would be mounted, there is a short black wire that makes a horseshoe connecting the two blocks. off of this horseshoe, is another unlabeled black wire with a screw down connecter. is this just a ground? also, next to that wire, is a blue wire, that horseshoes between the two blocks, and has another thicker blue wire shooting off with a screw down connector. are both of these just grounds?

4-one black and one blue wire, with gray plastic connectors, that have a circular rubber grommet around the connector. unlabeled. and ideas?

i asked the other day about the pwer steering, and found that i need a ls1 power steering pump, will i also need a ls1 power brake master cylinder and setup?

i have read that it may be easier to drill extra holes in the S&P adapter motor mounts. then someone said that this may not be necessary with the ls1, only the truck engines, is this right? i have adapter plates from Speedway Motors, they look the same in the pics i have seen.

and dealing with the gauges. a buddy said he thought that if i did not have elctrical gauges hooked up to the harness, it would not run. he believed that it makes a loop, and if the harness is not getting a signal from a gauge, it will not allow the engine to start. is this right? if it is, what gauges are needed to run the engine. i am planning on oil pressure, water temp, and voltmeter, the small electrical cluster gauges from summit. is this all i need?

since i am leaving all wiring inside the engine bay, the only wiring i should have going through the firewall is for whatever gauges i need, right? so the whole engine harness only runs on the 4 fuse block that is with it?

what oil pan would the best for my application? is the f-body oil pan the only one that will work?

i know this is long, and probably redundant, and i appreciate any help fellas. and as soon as i start into this thing, i am sure i will be even more confued too.. :bash:

I bet a truck oil pan would work. I bought a new 98 flexplate sometime and it was only $60 or so. I can get the seller's info if your interested. He probably has more.

also, i have been reading old posts and came across someone asking about deleting the power steering.

what pulleys am i going to need? i will have the crank pulley, the alternator pulley, and water pump pulley for sure. but if i dont have the power steering hooked up by the time the truck is running, will this cause problems? i want to have power steering and a/c eventually, but it may not happen by the time i need the truck to be running. somone answered with a slave pulley on a bearing in the power steering position. will i need this for the a/c position too.

i ordered the fuel filter today, and will be ordering the lines and dorman fittings that were suggested asap.

i need to look at my truck and see what the fuel system looks like right now before i order the line. it is about 30 mins. away in storage and i cant remember exactly how we had it setup.

If you have and LS1 engine you need LS1 accessories due to their location front to back. If you want truck accessories you will need to get a truck crankshaft pulley. Same is true for Corvette accessories. I don't know why you can't bypass the p/s all together with a shorter belt, it will be a bitch to steer without the pump unless your truck has a manual steering box. The PCM doesn't care if you have gauges hooked up or not. I can't remember the Nelson harness having a place for gauges other than the tachometer. The rest of the gauges need to be done by buying a multi-function gauge that hooks into the PCM's OBDII connection. Any fbody or truck oil pan should work on your conversion. You will have to get the pickup tube and windage tray from a similar vehicle as the oil pan. Motor mounts are alway fun. You should be able to bolt them in without issue, maybe sliding the transmission back a little for alignment front to back. I've never seen the mounts you're speaking of. :pics: As for gauges later on, you'll probably have to hook up external gauges since the NBS PCM uses one digital signal to feed the data to all the gauges in the dash.

thanks red. i am looking for a cheap p/s pump, and may have found one, which i agree, is almost a necessity. and i too was looking at the harness, and could not figure out where the gauges would be plugging into. my plan was to just mount some external gauges anyway, look arent that big of a concern right now.

the oil pan thing is good too, the truck pans are a lot cheaper than the f-body pans. i will get some pics up here of the motor mount plates as soon as i find my camera, they look just like the s&p plates i saw in another post on here.

another thing, looking through the S&P catalog, they have their accessory kits for sale with pics. is there a reason for all the idler pulleys? some if the kits have two on the drivers side and two more on the passenger side. are the extra pulleys needed for something? or can i just get a belt for the stuff that i have, crank, water pump, alternator, p/s, and be done?
