my dad has a 2004 tahoe that appears to be leaking out of the rear pinion seal, i dont know what caused it but he does drive alot for work so the thing has 120,000 miles on it so that could have something to do with it, whats the work load to fix this or what will it cost him to take somewhere, any input would be great
That is a pretty easy fix. Remove the driveshaft. Mark the pinion nut so you can set it back the same way it is now. Remove the pinion nut and pop out the seal. Replace the seal and tighten the nut back to the mark you scribed. Reinstall the driveshaft. Check and refill the diff if needed. You may want to check a service manual first or take it to someone. It shouldn't cost over $150 to have it done. Sometimes the pinion bearings wear out so check it carefully for play.
i got underneath it and there wasnt any play in he pinion if thats the play your talking about, so in that case it should be pretty straight foward?

does anyone know that nut size or the exact tools i will need to do this so i can take the right ones with me when i go to my dads house to change the seal and where the best place to get the seal from would be
