Hello all,
I was curious how well a factory diesel muffler flows compared to a gas engine muffler. Does anyone know?? I am doing a 3.5in exhaust system on my truck and was thinking that a factory diesel muffler would go in there good if they flow well it may be a possibilty. I look forward to many replies, please give me your thoughts!!!

The diesels have a less restrictive muffler--a diesel would be extremely loud with just a muffler--that is why they have a resonator after the muffler--to quiet things down before the tailpipe. If you have a stock diesel muffler, throw it on there and see how it works...it's only a few welds if you have to take it off...Quote:

Just don't forget, sometimes going too large can hurt your flow.

Is this really true for the trucks???? the f-body cars with ls1 want a huge exhaust, more flow the better, sorta oppisite of the old engines needing some backpressure....I have a 4in spintech system on the ss and it help it tremendously!
i am definately givin the 3.5in pipe a try, not sure about the muffler yet
If you go too large, the exhaust gas can actually begin to cool, which causes them to become more dense, and more difficult to move. That's why a lot of guys wrap headers - hotter gas flows faster.
