Need help picking out a cam

I want to have a nice lope but dont want to over cam it. Its for a 2001 stock 4.8, I already bought a stock LS1 cam off ebay for $25 I was goin to have it custom grinded to 220/220 stock 4.8 lift and 112LSA. I want to keep my lift stock so I can mill the heads .030 and raise my compression from 9.5/1 to 10.9/1. Im thinking a 3000 stall should do fine. Im open to any suggestions because I am by far not an engine builder. Also any idea on how much a cam install is, I was thinking of going to Futral Motorsports since their right around the corner for me.

if you are going to do a 3000 stall, you could do a little more duration if you want to. I would do a little more lift than stock too since stock lift is only around .500. We normally dont mill for compression, so thats up to you.
A cam install price depends on where you go. We normally charge $400 for cam and springs.

Do you think it would be best to leave the heads stock? I was just looking for an easy way for a few more horses. How much duration would you go if you were building this one for yourself? Thanks Brett

No that is the biggest duration he needs to go with being an ec and only a 3000 especially since he only has a 4.8 The 222/224 112 I had in my 5.3 needed a 3600 to really come on hard. 220 with a 3k in a 4.8 is still pushing it IMO more like a 3200 would be perfect. What is wrong with milling the heads to gain compression, its cheap easy hp, but since he is obviously going to be paying someone for installation the bang for the buck factor is no longer there.

Alot of that depends on personal preference; like does mpg matter.
If it were mine and wanted to have a good mix, I would do a low to mid 220s on a 112 with a stall, headers and exhaust. That will be alot of fun to drive and sound great.
You could do a larger cam, but it needs to be a good combination; not just a big cam by itself.

You may have needed more stall, but that depends on how loose or tight it is and even by the brand you use. We have done as big as 228 112 with a 3000 and it worked great. We do order the stall to work well with the cam.
As far as milling the heads, by the time a customer pays r&r plus new head bolts and fluids the &#036;/hp is not that great. If someone does their own work then I could see milling some, but not much.

I have a close family friend who has a machine shop, he was doing the milling for free. Im just paying for cam install parts and labor. I have another question maybe someone can help me with. I put some shorty headers on it and it gained E/T by .5 sec, took them off and lost .5 sec back to what Im running now. I was told I took to much back pressure off my little motor. My question is will it lose E/T if I put LT&#39;s with the cam? Thankyou for all your opinions I like guidance so I can make the best choices. Thanks Brett

The main problem with a free flowing exhaust is that it does take away low end that can be cured with a stall converter, with that 4.8 I would highly recommend that as your next mod not a cam or lt headers. Get a 3200ish converter in there then throw some lts on it, then efans then a cam. Those are the biggest bang for the buck mods by far, a cam likes to breath and needs more converter so do those first so when you get the cam in you will be happy with it.

Im going ot go out on a limb and say that 228 wasnt in an ec with a 4.8?

Me personally I want my stall speed to be where the cam really sets you back in your seat. The 222/224 I had pull alright then at about 3600 it was like you hit it with a shot of nitrous, thats where I would want my stall speed ot be. There are plenty running 3K stalls with 224 cams and larger just not my cup of tea or net you the best numbers. vv8&#39;s truck is a freak though that thing only flashes to 2500 with his 226 cam and cuts 1.7 60fts, I have never seen anything like it and honestly dont know how the hell to explain it other then its a freak.

I agree, VV8 and Bluecajun have some freakishly fast trucks&#33; :rock:

We will also have a truck done in a day or two that we did a 224 .560 112 cam, Patriot heads, 3000 yank, and victor Jr.
