    Hey guys,

A buddy brought his truck over today and it's smoking like a mofo!
He admitted to puttin way tooooooo much oil in the engine, not sure how.
He drove it for a few miles, then drained it and put the right amount in.
It's still smoking very badly. I changed the plugs because they were dripping with oil. At least three of them were. The others were coated in burned oil.
I just changed them and now it's still smoking, so he just didn't foul out the plugs.

Is it possible to break the rings, piston, etc, by adding too much oil?

It's not looking good, lol, it smokes a lot!!!! Like a good tire burnout.

I just don't want to tear into it before I understand what happened.
I'm going to do a compression test and leakdown on it just to make sure.

thanks for any input, obviously, I've never had to deal with this before, hahaha.

My friend did this to her corolla before she moved to California. When they got there they had the oil changed and a tune-up done to make sure they met requirements of Cali emissions. On the way home the car still smoked, but after putting around 50 miles on it the smoke started clearing. I would try driving it around some and letting it sit over night and see how it drives around tomorrow.

i had a 87 chevy silverado 4x4 that had a bad vacuum modulator on the tranny and it sucked tranny fluid in the motor and smoked like crazy, it burned about a 1-1/2 qt total, very embarrassing, but after driving around some it cleared up and ran fine, what a scare but your buddies truck should be fine .

I'll try it, but when I started it and ran it for about 10mins I had to turn it off so it would quit smoking everyone out. The more I revved it, the more smoke came out. I mean a lot of smoke, but I'll drive it tomorrow and see what happens.

    thanks,

Too much oil will create too much pressure in the crankcase. Typically resulting in spewing oil out wherever it can get. Usually this is past the rings, while it may not break the rings, it will make them crap and you'll get blowby. In some engines, (don't know bout LS1's) the crank will slap the shit out of the oil and foam it up, actually creating pressure loss.

    Drain that extra oil ASAP

Having to much probably cauxed it to get into the PCV system and back into the intake. I'd drive it til it stops smoking then run some GM top end engine cleaner through it to get rid of the carbon on the tops of the pistons. Then it will smoke like no bodies busines.

Seafoam it seriously I am with BlackWS6 if its all in the intake it will keep burnig oil comign from the PCV system. But with as much smoke as I am envisioning from your description I would say that it could quite possibly be toasted rings.

Could the cats be holding unburned oil, and start smoking when they get hot?

    I found the problem, LOL.
The added oil must have been just a coincedence.

I drained the oil and found small pieces of ring on the magnet. I then pulled the pan and I found a piston with a broken piston skirt.
    What causes this?

    thanks,

    allen
